The One Conversation You Must Have Before Buying a Franchise
Aug 13, 2025 3:18 pm
Hi there,
You're deep in the franchise buying journey. You’ve analyzed the market, your finances, and have poured over the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) until your eyes glazed over.
And while these steps are essential, the most critical piece of your research won't be found in any official paperwork. So, what’s the secret?
Talking to the people who are already living your potential future: current and former franchisees.
To put it another way, this is your chance to get the unvarnished truth.
That said, the FDD provides the blueprint, but conversations with existing owners paint the real-world picture. Before you commit, you need to hear directly from those on the inside. Ask them the tough questions. Go beyond a simple "Are you happy?"
Consider asking:
- "Knowing what you know now, would you do this again?"
- "How accurate were the initial investment and working capital estimates the franchisor provided?"
- "Describe the level of ongoing support you actually receive from the corporate office. Is it what was promised? And how fast do you get it?"
- "What does a typical week really look like, and how long did it take to become profitable?"
Note: I provide dozens more questions you NEED to ask every franchisee you contact in this Guide.
Bottom line?
Speaking with multiple franchisees, including those who have left the system, provides an invaluable, three-dimensional view of the brand, its culture, and its true profit potential.
Pro-tip: Don't just rely on the list the franchisor gives you; do your own digging.
Now, go make those calls!
