When you're doing your research on a franchise opportunity you like, it's tempting to pick up the phone to call franchisees your franchise representative at headquarters sent you contact information for.
But, if you ONLY call them, you're making a huge mistake.
Don’t Rely on Hand-Picked References.
The biggest mistake franchise buyers make is only speaking with franchisees the franchisor recommends. These are typically the happiest, most successful owners in the system—giving you a curated, one-sided story. It’s like buying a car based solely on the dealer’s cherry-picked testimonials without test driving it yourself. Here's what to do instead.
Call of couple franchisees from that list. Ask them good questions. Hear what they have to say. Then...
Put the list away.
Open the FDD and start calling franchisees listed on it randomly. Ask them the questions that need to be asked.
The good news?
The franchisees you called from the list your franchise rep gave you an opportunity to practice.
To practice the uncomfortable task of calling people and asking them about stuff like money-and how much they're making, etc.
