Instagram LogoLike so many, my technical acumen is what brought me to a CAD/BIM management role. While I can’t imagine being an effective CAD/BIM manager without a strong technical acumen, one of the great lessons I’ve learned over the years is how little that knowledge will allow you to advance in such a role. To advance beyond an individual contributor role, effective CAD/BIM managers must become as much PR specialists as they are technology specialists. After all, the awesomeness of what you create means little if those who will benefit from it don’t know about it. But, as any PR specialist knows, there’s more to communication than just telling others something exists. Promoting something to an audience has little to do with telling and everything to do with involving and relating to the needs of your audience. The awesomeness of your creations will only be as great as the value others see in them - not the value you see in them. As a CAD/BIM manager, it’s never about you; it’s about the team you support. If your communication strategy is all about you, that team will never be as successful as their potential. And in the field of CAD/BIM management, your success is only as great as the success of the team you support. In that way, finding mutual success for both you and the team you support has little to do with what you create and almost everything about how you communicate it.
