What do I have that’s new for you?

Happy Halloween to those of you who celebrate! This newsletter is filled with quite a few treats (and zero tricks)! I hope you are all staying healthy and staying sane, as best we can in the current state of the world. Life here is a constant flow of carefully controlled chaos (as usual). Covid has wreaked havoc on my writing schedule, but in one weeks time I will be headed to a writing getaway where I will spend an entire week getting the words out to fill some of the amazing covers I have been buying for the story ideas crashing around in my head. Releases this year have been fewer and farther between than I had anticipated, but next year promises lots of new releases that I am extremely excited to share with you.

Tidbits for the tribe!

The end of the year is bringing so many new things. Today the anthology I mention regularly is having a "party" in the Facebook group THE HATTER HANGOUT. Please feel free to drop by and join in the fun. Get to know the other authors in the anthology, play games (and win prizes!) and get sneak peaks of their books as well.

We have quite a few new readers, and I want to say “Welcome!” I’m so glad to have you! As always you are free to unsubscribe using the button at the bottom, but I do hope you’ll stay. I love interacting with readers and you can find all my social media contacts towards the bottom of this newsletter. You’re welcome to email me as well! (After all, it’s only fair. I get to email you!)

I include reads from other authors that I think my readers will like. Please feel free to email me if you read them and love them, or if they aren't your cup of tea and there are others genres you'd prefer to see.

Here is my piece of flash fiction for October. This is a tiny tease of a piece that will be released in an anthology next October.

BY THE LIGHT OF THE MOON

Smoothing the thin layer of dust from the tombstone I sighed. A tear trickled down my cheek. The chill of the wind swept through my thin clothing.

"Soon, my love. Soon." My voice hitched on the whisper.

I looked toward the sky to visualize the progress of the moon in spite of knowing the exact moment it would be in position. The moonlight would would be the only witness to our reunion. Setting the candles in their small, black, ceremonial dishes, I adjusted them so they sat just so.

The salt dribbled from my hand as I walked the circle, chanting the words I'd been practicing for the last nine months. I had only a single chance to do this right. If I screwed up I'd have to wait another 365 days.

As the circle closed I felt the magic coalesce and I shivered, goosebumps rising across my skin. I called his name, willing his spirit to me.

"Yesenia?"

I sobbed as he shimmered into view before me.

"Just another minute, my love."

The obsidian dagger felt both weightless and too heavy in my hand at the same time. Slicing the meaty part of my palm open, I squeezed the wound, my blood pouring into the earth with in the circle. I closed my eyes and repeated the words of the spell fervently, focusing on my only wish. I didn't open them until I felt his hands grasp my upper arms.

I stared into his eyes, every bit as alive as they had been before his death ten months ago. I raised my hand to his face, leaving a smear of my blood as I caressed his chiseled cheek bone.

"How..." he asked.

I shook my head. "It doesn't matter. We only have a little time."

His lips crashed down onto mine. I'd done it, he was really here. His taste hadn't changed with his time in the spirit world. We sank down onto the blanket I'd laid above his grave. His hands grazed my skin, the warmth seeping into my soul as he tore off my clothes.

I wrapped my legs around his waist, clinging to him as if I could hold him to this Earth by sheer will alone. His hand made a fist in my hair, tugging my head back and exposing the sensitive skin of my neck to his teeth and his tongue.

All time came to a stop as we crashed together, fulfilling needs that had been denied since we became separated by the veil of this existence and the world of the dead.

Our frenzied intimacy faded into a tender embrace. He held me closely, gazing into my eyes.

"I'm so sorry."

I laid my finger over his lips and shook my head. "This isn't the time. The magic is fading, and I only wish to have pleasant memories to hold onto. They will have to last me until next year."

Next year, I'd find a way to keep him with me longer. Maybe next year I'd bring him back for good...
