Hey Ho, Tenebrous Cult!

Pardon me if this week’s missive is lacking in my typical joie de vivre, but technical snafus yeeted the first iteration into oblivion, so while we practice deep breathing and remind ourselves that change is a good thing, actually, you’re getting the bullet pointed edition! No extraneous wit or wordplay within fifty yards of this sucker, I promise.

Thank f&%king god, the readers mutter, you’re never as funny as you think you are, and we have places to be.

Well now you’re just being mean. Besides, there are no better places to be! Just look at this:

KAYAK COVER ART REVEAL

We’ve told you a little about the books we have in store for you next year; now it’s time to start showing you. Check out this lovely cover courtesy of Kerisson Wemerson:

About KAYAK:

For eighteen-year-old Keith—floating alone on a series of lakes and rivers, lost and without supplies—his kayak is his means of survival. Solid ground means certain death at the scissor-claws of vicious invading creatures.

What he needs is to find more people; but terrible guilt anchors him in solitude. A year earlier, when the creatures first appeared, it was Keith's choices that brought disaster to the island community that took him in.

Now, it's time to take responsibility for his actions, heal his scars, and survive.

Told in two alternating timelines, Kayak is a story of family, the strength we draw from others, and the strength we learn to draw from ourselves.

"Impressive, fast and gripping. You'll want to add this water-based survival horror to the top of your TBR shelf."

  • Sonora Taylor, award-winning author of Little Paranoias: Stories and Without Condition

“A riveting, fast-paced, genre-blending story. Readers are going to have a lot of fun with this one.”

  • Laura Cranehill, author of Wife Shaped Bodies

“An original and surprising apocalyptic tale. The dual narrative is a revelation. A highly recommended dystopian tale with a heart.”

  • David Moody, author of Autumn, Hater, and Shadowlocked

KAYAK kicks off a very Tenebrous 2026, next February.

We’ve been revealing the cards one by one over on the Tenebrous Bluesky, but for you impatient types, here’s the entire reading.

Be warned though: the cards may not be in your favor:

About CLAIRVIOLENCE:

The Tarot holds mystery, prediction, and unsettling omens for those who practice, divine, or are sensitive to it.

A turn of the cards weaves CLAIRVIOLENCE through space and time to delve into the stories of those shaken by life-shattering choices that threaten to tear their souls apart:

A warring couple is forced to reconcile during the end of the world.

A young man is drawn into the surreal prison-scape of an elderly woman.

A dead woman’s curse travels miles and decades to bring her killer to justice.

CLAIRVIOLENCE unearths one novelette and ten short stories—each one exclusive to this volume—beneath the exterior of an otherwise charmed and quiet existence.

Cover art by Bri Crozier. Interior illustrations by Mo Moshaty, with Matt Blairstone.

"Unsettling and thought-provoking. Moshaty's characters rise from the page."

  • Tim McGregor, Lure and Eynhallow

"Mo knows what horror lovers want. Incredible tales from an incredible talent. These stories pop.”

  • Mark Matthews, To Those Willing To Drown

CLAIRVIOLENCE is out October 21st.

TRVE CVLT is One Year Old!

And author Michael Bettendorf took the opportunity to craft a toe-tapping new ditty, film a video running around the Frost-Blasted Mountains of Might lovely woodlands of Nebraska, and hoover up Lemmy-sized heaps of blow off of a sword blade \m/____\m/

Doesn’t look like SendFox will let me embed videos, but you can watch the blasphemy here in full.

There was a whole hyper-metal photo session, too, it looks like:

We’ll be slipping these into the pockets of unsuspecting shoppers at VoidCon, and shipping them with future TRVE CVLT orders through our webstore.

If you haven’t yet taken the plunge on our Black Metal Gamebook, well, remedy that huh?

About TRVE CVLT:

You wake with a brutal hangover, but that can't crush your spirits: you’ve been invited to take back the drum throne for Abyss, the cult band you co-founded!

It means quashing a turbulent history with Abyss' vocalist, Austin. You aren’t sure if he’s invited you back to bury the hatchet, or if he’s just desperate because infamous black metal legends Waste Doctrine are rolling through town. They've given you the opportunity to open for them and maybe, finally, get the hell out of this nowhere town.

The promise of the upcoming gig doesn't come without its share of hurdles. Austin’s hellbent on creating a ritualistic experience out of the performance, turning the abandoned roadhouse he’s chosen as a venue into a bloody, occult nightmare. Yes, it’s black f$%king metal, but is it too far?

Only you can decide.

Get the gig. Ditch this town. Burn them all alive.

Happy Anniversary Betts, you sword-waving Weirdo; we love you.

Speaking of VoidCon…

HEY, HO, VOIDCON IN TWO WEEKS, LET’S GO!

image

This section was also quite a bit longer in the original draft, but we're gonna save our energy for the trip.

Suffice to say, Alex and I will be in attendance and you can get all the info here. The confirmed participants list is stacked with buds we haven’t seen in too long, and buds we’ve never yet shared a room with! Needless to say, we are stoked.

My two previous attempts to breach the Void were scuttled—my brother’s wedding in 2023, and a hurricane in 2024. Ain’t nothing gonna stop us this time.

Take care of yourselves and take care of each other; the world is on fire, but we're wearing flame-retardant underwear. We've got this.

Neither wedding nor hurricane nor fatally flawed message service can stop us.

Hail indie publishing.

Hail New Weird Horror + More.

Hail the Tenebrous Cult.

Matt + Alex
