Your nervous system may see money stress as a threat

Hi ,

Money can be a tender topic.

Even thinking about finances can sometimes bring up a tight feeling in the chest, a knot in the stomach, or that low-level hum of worry in the background.

To be a little vulnerable here… I know this feeling too. Money can be emotional. It can be complex.

Some people seem able to weather financial storms with relative ease ⛈️

But for others, the response to money can feel much deeper. Almost visceral..

This can sometimes be shaped by earlier life experiences, such as growing up without financial security, navigating debt, losing a home, or other stressful experiences linked to money.

So why do we feel this way when it comes to finances?

It’s because financial safety is closely linked to our most basic human needs.

When we’re worried about money, the nervous system may interpret this as a potential threat to things like shelter, food, stability, or security.

And from a biological perspective, that matters.

Our brains are wired to protect us from anything that could impact our safety or survival. So when finances feel uncertain, the body may move into a protective stress response without us even realising.

This is where the fight, flight or freeze response can come in. You might notice:

  • racing thoughts
  • tension in the body
  • a sense of urgency or panic
  • shutting down or avoiding decisions altogether
  • difficulty thinking clearly

This isn’t because you’re weak or incapable.

It’s your nervous system trying to help by preparing you to deal with a perceived threat 😨

Sometimes that can mean shifting energy and resources towards the parts of the body involved in action, like the muscles in the arms or legs...

And at the same time, areas involved in long-term planning, reflection, or decision-making may become a little less accessible in the moment...

Which can make it really hard to think calmly or clearly about financial decisions 🤯

We might react quickly, avoid things altogether, or feel overwhelmed by even small financial tasks.

And often, the very self care that could support us during these times quietly slips away too.

Which is why I’ve recorded a gentle tapping session to support moments of financial stress or anxiety...

This session isn’t about solving anything...we’re not trying to figure out budgets or plans.

We’re simply helping the body step out of that protective stress response, even just a little, so you can:

  • soften tension
  • create space around worry
  • and approach decisions from a calmer, steadier place

Because when the nervous system feels safer, it’s often easier to respond thoughtfully, rather than react from fear.
