🗓️ The Hiring Report & The Truth About the "Best Time" to Hire

I was recently looking at the KPMG and REC, UK Report on Jobs, which is a fantastic snapshot of the UK's recruitment and employment landscape. These reports are full of valuable data and insights, compiled from hundreds of consultancies.
Quick top view - plenty of people looking for a new job and not enough vacancies. This puts you in a strong position as a company who may be hiring in 2025.
But as I was looking through the numbers and trends, it got me thinking about something more fundamental—something the data can’t always capture:
There is no "best" time to hire.
We all have these unwritten rules, don't we?
"Don't hire in the summer, everyone is on holiday."
"Don't hire in November; they won't want to start in December."
We let the calendar or market sentiment dictate our actions.
And yet, in my experience, the numbers don't tell the whole story.
The "best" time to hire is not a season, a month, or even a quarter.
The "best" time to hire is: now.
Or, even better, now minus eight to twelve weeks.
Why?
Because the moment you realise you need a new team member, you've already needed them for weeks.
The process of finding, interviewing, and onboarding that person takes time. Delaying it for a "better time" on the calendar simply prolongs the gap and adds to the pressure.
The most successful companies, regardless of what the broader market reports say, are the ones that are always hiring.
- They’re not waiting for a specific time of year.
- They’re continuously building their network, engaging with great people, and;
- Positioning themselves to act decisively the moment the right talent becomes available.
So, while reports give us a great overview of the market, don't let them—or a dated hiring myth—prevent you from acting when your business needs it most.
The best time to start looking for your next team member is right now.
