🎸 London Calling & the Power of a 'Tight' Team! 🥁

Hi there ,
Reading time: 1 min 28 secs
A few weeks back, I went to a gig that was a blast – a cover band for The Clash called London Calling.
Now, The Clash isn't quite my era, but those songs are timeless classics for sure!
Even though I didn't know many of the tunes, the band themselves were absolutely tight. They knew each other's every move, playing as one cohesive unit.
What really struck me was how they operated.
They were together in every sense, and they even gave one of their newest members a song to sing up front.
It got me thinking about how much I wish I'd stuck with my drums from my teenage years, or learned the guitar (instead of, for some reason, the flute!).
But mostly, it got me thinking about your business.
That band, operating as one seamless entity, perfectly mirrors a brilliant team.
You have different people with different skills, playing different instruments, yet contributing to a single, powerful sound.
Even the newest member, who perhaps wasn't as strong a singer as the others, blended in perfectly because he knew all the words and felt part of the group. You knew he was still honing his craft, and the crowd loved him for it.
This is a powerful lesson for hiring:
- Harmony in Diversity: Your business, like a band, thrives on different talents and personalities. Look for how individuals complement each other, not just how they stand alone.
- Trust and Anticipation: When a team is "tight," members anticipate each other's needs and movements. This comes from strong communication, shared goals, and mutual respect.
- Nurture Developing Talent: Just like the cover band gave their newest member a moment in the spotlight, be open to hiring for future potential and not just current skills. Provide opportunities for growth and integration, and watch how quickly new team members can contribute effectively when supported.
- Every Piece Matters: From the lead singer to the drummer, every role is crucial. Similarly, every person in your business, regardless of their position, contributes to the overall success and culture.
So, when you're building your next team, think less about finding a solo virtuoso and more about assembling a "tight" band – where everyone plays their part, supports each other, and creates something incredible together.
Happy Hiring,
Helen
