Master anchoring psychology to feel better and avoid scams

Where's your anchor, captain?

Anchoring applies to more than just the nautical world. It's one of the most useful psychology concepts to understand.

Not only can smart anchoring change your perspective and your life, but knowing it can help you to spot shady sales tactics that many people and companies use today. Anchoring has such varied uses because it's a fundamental part of human psychology.

What is Anchoring?

When we receive a piece of information, and then another (related) piece of information, we tend to use the first piece of information to help us interpret the second, third, and fourth piece of information. The first piece becomes an anchor of sorts, often holding more weight in our minds simply because we saw it first.

But what happens when the first piece of information is the most inaccurate one? What if the second and fourth piece of information we see are actually the most accurate and useful anchor points? That's when anchoring can hurt or deceive us.

The most common example of sketchy anchoring is when someone introduces a product with an enormous claimed value that far exceeds its true value. (It seems that I'm the only entrepreneur online who doesn't do this.) You see it all the time, where online marketers seemingly pick a value out of thin air.

"Worth over $3,697!"

Yeah, sure it is...

But if they can successfully anchor you to a package value of $3,697 or anywhere near that number, then $300 sure seems like a bargain! But when it's only actually worth $20, that's no bargain, it's a ripoff.
