Survival tips - nuclear edition

Hello friends!

I hope this email finds you well :)

I’m currently neck-deep in research for my new series. Did you know many experts consider the risk of even a minor nuclear exchange isolated to one region (between India and Pakistan, for example) to be a significant threat to humanity?

For most of us, following the end of the cold war, the risk of nuclear war has seemed a distant threat. But even a small-scale regional exchange could throw up enough soot and debris into the atmosphere to cause a prolonged nuclear winter, where the sun is obscured, temperatures drop, and global famine could result. Not to mention the lives lost in the initial exchange. Add to this the fact that several developing, unstable countries now have access to nuclear weapons, and the threat of a nuclear strike is something we should at least consider when making emergency preparations.

Considering that most fallout and bomb shelters have been abandoned or closed, what should you do if there is a strike close to home?

Did you know that while extremely deadly, the worst effects of nuclear weapons are confined to a limited zone. It's possible to survive a nuclear explosion and its aftereffects, so long as you can find suitable shelter and stay there until the radioactive fallout has decayed enough to make it safe to go outside.

If you see a blast or receive an alert warning, go immediately inside a solid building, move toward its center, and shelter away from windows, doors, and exterior walls to best protect yourself from the blast itself, as well as the resulting nuclear fallout. Staying inside for at least 24 hours will help you avoid the worst of any fallout, and some experts recommend 48-72 hours, or up to two weeks depending on your proximity to the blast.

Having basic emergency supplies at home, at work, and in your car will help you prepare for and respond to any disaster, let alone a nuclear one.

The good news is, as long as you are outside the initial blast radius, sheltering in place provides a good chance at survival.
