Howdy speedgolf family! You're reading This Week in Speedgolf.

This newsletter is like rain in April. You know it's coming, but you can never be sure exactly when.

Here's what's happening in speedgolf this week.

Indiana Speedgolf Open - wet shoes, full hearts

I've played speedgolf with Nick "the Pink Streak" Evans many times. Here's how it usually plays out:

  • Nick explains he's woefully out of shape, he's learned his lesson about going out too fast, he's going to pace himself this time, he suggests I should tee off ahead of him
  • I remind him that 100% of rounds we've played on the same day, he's been the faster speedgolfer
  • He reluctantly agrees to go first
  • He beats me by 2-6 minutes

Because we love tradition, we did the same dance at the Indiana Speedgolf Open last weekend at Twin Bridges Golf Club. But this time, Nick must really have been out of shape, because he only beat me by 1 minute and 44 seconds.

How did our golf scores compare? I don't see how that's relevant to this conversation!

If you want evidence that speedgolf is growing in the US, look no further than the first event on the Speedgolf USA calendar. 17 players from 9 states made the trip to little Danville, Indiana. For me, it was a blast from the past driving through the little towns where I used to play little league baseball.

Conditions could not have been better. 58℉ when we teed off (14.5℃). The greens were fast and true. Nick even waded into a marsh to hit a shot.

Surprising nobody (except maybe himself), Nic Goodin -- the Southpaw from Springfield -- won the Open division, shooting a 77 in 53:48 = 130:48.

What surprised me was how close the competition was. Newcomer Michael Hillyard shot 75 in 57:20 = 132:20 in his first competitive outing, edging out the Pink Streak for silver by a full minute.

The Senior division was even closer at the top, with Jon McDugle shooting 82 in 64:13, only to be edged out by the surprisingly-spry host Gary Sobczak with an 83 in 63:07 = 146:07. Just seven seconds separating the seniors.

New podcast: Is speedgolf too expensive?

Don't miss the latest edition of Speedgolf Baby Rainbow Unicorns. It took me a bit too long to edit, but I still think you'll love it. Show notes:

  • Previewing Adam's first tournament of the season
  • What makes the ultimate speedgolfer?
  • Is speedgolf getting too expensive?
  • The SpeedScore watch fleet coming to a tournament near you
  • And lots of laughs along the way

Speedgolf Baby power ranks coming next week!

After the Australian Open concludes this weekend, it will be time to see where we stand six months before the Speedgolf World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand.

As you know, there is a rigorous methodology behind my rankings. It's nothing but cold, hard vibes. Reams upon reams of well-formatted speculation. Terabytes of random thoughts that passed through my head.

Next week, you'll meet the who's who of elite speedgolfers in 2026.

Speedgolf USA: concept art for speedgolf kit

SGUSA is smart to be thinking about the 'look and feel' of speedgolf. My question is: are you guys going to get sued for using those logos???

Chris Smith is trying to save slowgolfers from themselves

image

Chris Smith, former speedgolf world record holder and GOLF Top 100 teacher says slowgolfers can play better golf if they act more like speedgolfers.

(Speedgolfers nod in agreement)

In a new GOLF.com instruction feature, Smith shares a speedgolf-inspired pre-shot routine built around a simple idea: quit lingering, pick your target, get a rough number, see the shot, and go. The message lands with the slightly weathered authority of a guy who has seen enough aimless practice swings for one lifetime.
