Howdy speedgolf family! You're reading This Week in Speedgolf.

Huge week for speedgolf. We may finally have a watch app smart enough to track a round of speedgolf. Still no technology exists that can make sure I never see another post about fling golf.

Here's what's happening in speedgolf this week.

Professor of Speedgolf: "Watch this"

image

I caught up with Chris Hundhausen yesterday and he walked me through something every speedgolfer has dreamed about: a real speedgolf watch app.

Not a jury-rigged golf GPS that sort of works if you squint. Not a running watch that tracks splits but has no idea you're playing golf. Not two watches -- one on each wrist (my setup). An actual speedgolf app, built for speedgolf.

Chris — aka "The Professor of Speedgolf" — has spent the last couple years building SpeedScore into the leading speedgolf course database. If you've ever used it to look up time par or map a course, you know it's already the data backbone of our sport.

image

But here's the thing: until now, SpeedScore has been a planning tool. You check it before the round. If you're more diligent than I am, you post your score after (typing in each score by hand, mind you!)

That changes on March 13.

Chris has a working Garmin app ready to launch, and I got to see it in action. This is phone-free speedgolf. Wrist-based navigation. Live scoring. Automated hole splits. The works.

Here's how it works:

You show up at the course and start a new round on your watch. The app looks for nearby courses in the SpeedScore database (currently 96 courses mapped, with 64 having at least one mapped tee box). If it finds your course, it downloads the route to your phone, then pushes it to your watch.

At that point, you can leave your phone in the car.

On the first tee, your watch shows yardage and a directional arrow to the hole. It tracks your hole time and round time. When you reach the green (the app can tell), it prompts you to enter your score. You can set a default — par, bogey, double — so if you're playing clean, you just tap once and move on. Skip it entirely and the app will fill in your default, letting you edit later.

Between holes, a yellow arrow points you to the next tee. Huge unlock for the directionally-challenged like James McMaster (who got lost during the Nagoya Bayside Classic and ran an extra kilometer -- his literal nightmare).

You can pause the round if you need to. You can pull up your scorecard mid-round. You can review hole-by-hole splits, either from manual lap presses or inferred GPS data.

It's everything I want in a speedgolf watch, and honestly, it's more than I expected this soon.

Now, a few caveats:

  • The app works with Garmin watches that have 5 buttons — older models haven't been tested yet.
  • Works with the Garmin app on both iPhone and Android for setup and syncing.
  • Posts rounds to Garmin and SpeedScore. (If your watch auto-uploads to Strava, that should work too, though Chris isn't a Strava guy, so it's untested.)
  • Stroke entry is manual for now, but Chris told me auto stroke-counting is coming soon.
  • Course mapping is still web-only — you can't map a new course from the watch yet (though that sounds like a killer feature for version 2.0).

There's a rumored subscription price of $10/month. I say "rumored" because Chris hasn't confirmed it publicly, but if that's the number, I think it's more than fair for what you're getting.

If you want in on the launch, head to speedscore.org and create an account. Chris is happy to answer questions — he's that kind of guy.

I'll say this: I'm a COROS guy, but after seeing this demo, I started shopping Garmin watches on eBay last night. The watch faces are information-dense right now (read: not pretty), but this is just the beginning.

For years, speedgolf has relied on scattered tools, homemade workarounds, and a lot of mental math. What Chris is building here is infrastructure. Mapped courses. Time par baked into the system. Navigation. Cleaner splits and recordkeeping.

This is the kind of thing that makes speedgolf easier to play, easier to track, and easier to compare across courses. And if we want this sport to grow, that matters.

If you don't already have an account on SpeedScore, you can create one for free. Maybe this will push you over the edge.

This is an unpaid placement because I'm not very good at monetizing.

Fling Golf is coming to ESPN

image

The 2026 Fling Golf tour will air on ESPN (the deuce, to be specific).

My official position on Fling Golf is this: I think there is a niche sport for everyone, and when you find your niche sport, I'm happy for you. That said, Fling Golf is a ridiculous game only suitable for recovering lacrosse players.

This Week in Speedgolf Media

📊 Carl Palmberg's handicap and swing evolution — these take forever to make, but I wish every speedgolfer would document the journey like this.

🏆 Speedgolf France drops an early candidate for image of the year — Britta Uschkamp rolling in a long putt with an 8-iron, striking a pose that belongs on a poster.

🚢 Kyle Peyton practices speedgolf on a cruise ship — hits into a net, runs laps around the deck. If you can't find a course, make one.

📸 Lauren Cupp makes snowless par at Rome CC — snow's gone, and one of speedgolf's best creators is back to work.

🎬 late_birdie films Luke Willett smashing a 5K in 15:58 — exactly the kind of content that makes non-speedgolfers ask "wait, how fast?"
