Day 31: Self-Care, Spoon Theory & a Whole Lot of Gratitude 💜

On this final day of Lupus Awareness Month, I’m reflecting, sharing self-care tools, and saying thank you.

Hello 💞

Can you believe we’ve shown up together every day for Lupus Awareness Month? (Okay—except that one day I missed and had to double up… thank you for the grace! 😅)

We’ve discussed medications, breakthroughs, types of lupus, lived experiences, and stories that often go untold. It has been an educational journey for many of us, including me. Today, I’m slowing things down and closing out this campaign the way I’ve lived most of this month: with presence, intention, and truth.

This morning, I woke up low on energy. I planned to do a video, something more polished to wrap everything up. But I realized this is a perfect moment to practice what I preach. So today’s topic is self-care—especially on the days when showing up looks different than planned.

The Spoon Theory

If you’ve ever heard someone with a chronic illness say they’re “out of spoons,” they’re likely referring to the Spoon Theory—a simple but powerful way to describe energy management.

Created by Christine Miserandino, the Spoon Theory explains that people with chronic illnesses start each day with a limited number of “spoons.” Every action—getting out of bed, cooking a meal, even reading messages—uses up a spoon. When you run out, you’re done. It’s a helpful metaphor for prioritizing energy and being kind to ourselves when we can't do it all.

Today is a low-spoon day for me, and instead of pushing through, I’m sharing a slower, softer close to the month.

Bottom-Shelf Self-Care

Bottom-shelf self-care is the kind that’s easy to reach—literally and figuratively. It’s a concept that helps us let go of “all or nothing” thinking.

Instead of aiming for elaborate routines, bottom-shelf self-care is about small things that help us feel seen, soothed, and supported—especially when our energy is depleted.

Here are a few suggestions to include in your own bottom-shelf kit:

Having this kind of kit ready can help you meet your basic needs when everything feels overwhelming. It can also serve as a gentle reminder: You matter, even on your lowest days.

A Note for Caregivers

If you’re someone who supports a loved one with chronic illness—thank you.

You’re not just a helper. You’re a human being with needs, too. Please don’t forget to take breaks, ask for help, and find support when you need it. Your energy and well-being are just as important.

And to my fellow loopies: Let’s remember to express gratitude to those who stand beside us. A thank-you goes a long way.

Gratitude improves our attitude and increases our blessings. I truly believe that.

Final Fundraising Update 💜

Because of YOU, we raised $3,072.55 for the Lupus Foundation of America, Georgia Chapter! (That doesn’t include matching donations still being processed.)

Your support is helping fund education, advocacy, and research to improve lives and outcomes for people living with lupus. Thank you for walking, sharing, donating, reading, and simply being present this month.

What’s Next?

Though Lupus Awareness Month ends today, I’m not going anywhere.

Starting in June, I’ll be sending monthly newsletters with updates, insights, reflections, and support resources for our community. Whether you’re living with lupus, caring for someone with chronic illness, or simply seeking to understand more, you’re welcome here.

This newsletter isn’t just for fundraising. It’s a space for connection, learning, and encouragement. I’m here to support you, whether you’re navigating a hard day with chronic illness or feeling overwhelmed as a caregiver searching for answers. You're not alone.

With All My Heart

This month has reminded me of my “why.” Why I speak out. Why I share. Why this work matters.

Thank you for walking this journey with me. Thank you for allowing me into your space. And thank you for helping me amplify awareness, one day at a time.

With deep gratitude,

xoxo, Jowanna
