I know what you’re thinking…literally any romance novel pairs well with Valentine’s Day. And yes, they definitely do. But hear me out…did you know there’s actually kind of a ton of actual Valentine’s Day themed romance novels? Of course there are. Whether you’re into Valentine’s Day or Galentine’s Day is more your speed, there’s plenty to choose from here. And if you’re participating in the month long #BlackAuthorReadathon like I am, I included a bunch of books by Black authors! I kicked off the readathon yesterday with Be Mine by @sjfbooks I’ve been saving up this spicy little book for months now! It’s an interracial poly Valentine’s Day novella! It’s about 4 roommates and bffs who decide to take it beyond “just friends” for Valentine’s Day. We have Ingrid (a curvy Black woman), Ade (a Black man), B.B. (a white man) and Ye-Jun (an Asian man). Ingrid is very inexperienced with the opposite sex (she’s a virgin) and these three friends are ready to show her the light. So you can pretty much guess that this book is like, hella steamy. And you’d be right. It’s totally spicy. BUT it’s somehow, so much more, in under 100 pages. It manages to also be incredibly soft & sweet. All 3 of these guys are big ass cinnamon rolls. They treat Ingrid with such care. When she gets her period, they make her cookies & cuddle her in bed. The consent is so sexy & spot on. They go slow with her, taking their time, always checking in and following her lead. And the after care post sex? Chef’s kiss. There’s a second book as well, but no cliffhanger. #OwnVoices Black author! Trigger warning*** for some violence toward the end. A guy gets aggressive with Ingrid at a bar and her guys come to her defense. I’ve only read a couple of these books and the rest I haven’t. This Martin Luther King Jr. weekend will be dedicated to amplifying Black voices, the 2021 festival theme. A range of authors—local to the Charleston area to international; debut to national best sellers—will be featured along with publishing professionals and community thought leaders to express how we can all best amplify and support Black voices and people.
