There was a time when I thought to be a successful author, I had to be a distinct "persona" for my audience, something specially curated. There were all sorts of rules about what I could and couldn't do, what I should and shouldn't talk about, and I did my best to follow those "best practices" for a while. But I can say even if my book sales weren't suffering, I was. I wondered what would I talk about if I couldn't talk about the things that mattered to me—namely how all of my various identities affected how I viewed the world and how the world viewed me and those who looked like me. How those matters affect how people would then view my work and the value judgments they place on them. Not being able to be authentic and authentically discuss things for fear of "turning people off," well, let's just say that wasn't it. Even now, you'll hear people say to new authors, etc., "don't talk about X/Y/Z."

But I say you SHOULD.

We aren't meant to speak to everyone. We simply can't resonate with all the people on the planet! The goal is to speak to the people we're meant to reach, and that means being our true selves, our authentic selves. You'll be much more effective and successful at reaching your goals, and they'll be the goals you actually want to accomplish, not what you've been told to want. I'll confess, it can be daunting and even scary, being yourself, particularly if you're in a situation in which that can feel hostile. What's more, some of us don't even know who our authentic self is.
