🟩 The one thing I couldn’t systematize

Oct 05, 2025 3:48 pm

Hi ,

I’ve always believed in systems.

Give me a complex problem, and I’ll break it down into a clear, repeatable process.

That’s just how my brain works — and it’s worked really well for a long time.

Especially when it comes to learning something new.

I had a method:

  1. Get clear on what I want to learn and why
  2. Find the best thinkers or experts in that area
  3. Research their work: summaries, TOCs, talks, interviews
  4. Choose one or two books to go deep on

Simple. Reliable. Effective.

In fact, I had a system for reading books too, but I’ll share that another time.

Over the years, I developed these kinds of processes for almost everything, and they worked.

So I started to believe that everything could be systematized.

That was my blind spot.

Because then came something I couldn’t untangle.

Something that wouldn’t bend to my process.

And that “something”… was me.

I found myself stuck - in a place I had coached others through many times.

I could see exactly what they needed to do. I knew how to guide them to clarity, simplify the problem, and move them into action.

But when it came to coaching myself the same way?

Nothing worked.

No matter how many frameworks I used.

No matter how much I tried to treat myself like a client.

It was frustrating.

And, strangely… fascinating.

Why doesn’t this work on me?

More on that in part two.
