🟩 Why Better Messaging Starts With One Question

The Simplify Profits newsletter is brought to you by:

If you sell your expertise and feel stuck between knowing what to do and actually doing it, Trusted Expert Growth Lab helps you move forward with clarity, and guided implementation. Simplify Selling Your Expertise

Hi ,

One of the biggest mistakes experts make is believing they're selling what they do.

Fractional CFOs think they're selling financial strategy.

Fractional CMOs think they're selling marketing leadership.

Consultants think they're selling expertise.

Coaches think they're selling coaching.

They're all wrong.

Not because those things aren't valuable.

But because that's almost never what the client is actually buying.

Imagine two fractional executives with identical experience, similar resumes, and comparable results.

One consistently attracts the right conversations, wins better clients, and commands higher fees.

The other struggles to stand out.

What's the difference?

Usually, it isn't expertise.

It's understanding what the client is really trying to accomplish.

A client doesn't wake up thinking:

"I need to hire a fractional COO."

They wake up thinking:

"Our operations are becoming chaotic."

"I need confidence before presenting this plan to the board."

"I can't keep running the business like this."

"We need someone who has solved this before."

Those are completely different conversations.

The first is about your service.

The second is about their progress.

That idea sits at the heart of a framework called Jobs to Be Done.

The framework suggests that people don't buy products or services.

They hire them to make progress.

When something else helps them make that progress better, faster, or with less risk, they "fire" the old solution and hire a new one.

It's a subtle shift in thinking, but it changes how you communicate your value.

Take the famous example of the quarter-inch drill.

People don't want a drill.

They don't even want a quarter-inch hole.

They want to hang a picture.

Go one step further, and they don't really want to hang a picture.

They want to enjoy seeing the people and memories that matter most every time they walk into the room.

The drill was never the product.

It was simply the tool.

The same thing happens in professional services.

Your framework isn't the product.

Your assessment isn't the product.

Your strategy deck isn't the product.

Your expertise isn't even the product.

They're the tools.

The real product is what those tools help your client become.

Maybe it's confidence.

Maybe it's clarity.

Maybe it's making a decision they can defend.

Maybe it's sleeping better because they know someone capable is helping steer the business.

That's why better messaging starts with one question:

What job is my client really hiring me to do?

Once you begin asking that question, everything starts to change.

Your positioning becomes clearer.

Your messaging becomes more relevant.

Your conversations become easier.

And your clients feel understood before you've even started working together.

That's something we explored in depth during one of this week's Premium discussions inside the Fractionals Growth Lab.

What started as a simple framework quickly became a practical conversation about positioning, messaging, authority, and how each member could apply the idea to their own business.

Because that's the goal.

Not just learning another framework.

Learning how to use it.

That's where real progress happens.
