June SewingNZ Newsletter – Vintage Edition
Dear Stitching Friends,
This month, we’re turning the rotary dial of history and stepping into the cozy, button-filled sewing rooms of the past. Whether you inherited your grandmother’s machine or picked up a vintage treasure at a market, you know that the hum of a well-loved sewing machine carries more than thread—it carries stories.
Let’s take a trip down memory lane and revisit the nostalgic sewing room essentials that shaped American sewing culture from the 1930s to the 1990s.
🧵 1930s–1950s: Ironing Boards & Singer Dreams
- Singer Featherweight 221 (Introduced in 1933)
- A cult classic today, this lightweight, portable machine was a wartime sewing marvel. Sleek black with gold decals, it stitched through generations.
- Wooden Darning Eggs & Sock Stretchers
- These tools were a staple during the Depression and WWII when “make do and mend” was a national motto.
- Cast Iron Irons (Before Steam!)
- Heavy and heated on stovetops—no digital displays here, just solid muscle.
🧵 1960s–1970s: Groovy Fabrics & Zigzag Machines
- Kenmore Sewing Machines from Sears
- Durable and affordable, Kenmore machines from this era were built like tanks and often handed down.
- Tupperware Sewing Boxes & Candy Tins with Buttons
- Practical, colourful, and usually crammed with mystery notions and half-used spools.
- Fabric of the Era:
- Psychedelic prints, double knits, and polyester reigned supreme. Bonus points if you still have 70s McCall’s patterns in your stash!
🧵 1980s–1990s: Neon Notions & First Sergers
- Singer Touch & Sew and Athena 2000
- Electronic features became big news. Flashy and futuristic—at least back then!
- Velcro, Puffy Paint, and Iron-On Transfers
- DIY fashion was booming. Add a unicorn patch and go!
- Baby Lock & White Superlock Sergers
- Home sewers finally got access to professional finishes, and these early machines are still loved today.
- Plastic Thread Organizers & Stackable Bobbin Cases
- Welcome to sewing storage, 80s-style: pastel, snappy, and proudly made in the USA.
