Cherry Chatter: Simone variety cherries are ripe and ready for picking, Cherry Express orders
Dec 12, 2025 12:37 pm
Cherry season is rolling along here at Roth Family Orchard Mudgee and we likely have only two weeks left of our sweet cherry season.
After the stop-start nature of early cherry varieties we’re now finding our rhythm as we are picking the Simones – our main variety and a fabulous cherry.
Apricots have been hugely popular at the orchard and are now finished for the season.
We were very lucky to see a hailstorm pass around us last night, not so lucky for others in the region. It was a pretty wild storm and rather spectacular to see it pass us by.
Birds haven't passed us by and we're busy chasing flocks of birds away from our fruit. Thankfully we have plenty so we can share a little.
Pick Your own
This weekend and through next week is a great time to visit to pick your own cherries. After the shocks of cold then heatwaves conditions the cherries are sweetening up nicely now and are very juicy. Some good size in there and plenty of them though not so many of the huge cherries we had last season.
Tomorrow (Saturday) has rain forecast in the afternoon but the morning looks to be ideal cherry picking weather. We suggest an early start and we open 7am -12pm over the weekend and through the week 7:30- 12pm (closed Wednesdays). Bookings are preferred here but not essential.
Orchard sales
Fresh picked cherries are available boxed at the orchard daily - typically at the pick your own shed in the mornings, at the old church in the afternoons.

Morello cherries - lots of queries about the sour cherries. Really difficult to predict when they will ripen. They were very late to flower but have suddenly started to colour this past few days. They maybe a week away or likely into the New Year. We will send out details once we know. At this stage I dot' expect we will have them on any of the Cherry Express runs.
We hope to see you through the season.
Cherry cheers
