PAPERBACK GIVEAWAY! πŸ˜ƒπŸ“š

Hi, !

Paperback Giveaway!

I need your help! For those of you who haven't heard, I'm taking a bit of a hiatus from the Timecaster world... but not from writing! While I work on the Jayne Thorne series, I'll be shifting gears with my own books - from urban fantasy to epic fantasy. So instead of badass witches and vampires in the city, I'll be writing about badass assassins and queens in a faraway kingdom!

Since this is new for me, I could use your help! If you wouldn't mind filling out this survey about your reading preferences, I would be most appreciative. As a thank you, everyone who submits the survey will be entered into my paperback giveaway! On Wednesday, September 15, I'll select three winners. Each winner will get to pick any one of my books in paperback to be shipped to them for free!

This segment is for those of you who are writing and looking to improve! Please keep in mind I am not an expert by any means, but I do have a lot of experience that I would love to share with you! πŸ™‚

This week's tip is on: The Writing Process!

The writing process is different for everyone! But I wanted to go over what I know about it and what I do for myself.

Step 1: Outline - this step varies, depending on if you're more of a plotter or a pantser. I used to go the whole nine yards and create a detailed outline based on Save the Cat Writes a Novel (highly recommend!). Now, I write out a few paragraphs detailing plot points I want to hit, and then I dive in.

Some people also like to build their world, maps, and characters ahead of time. For me, I let that stuff write itself (but when I shift to epic fantasy, that might change!)

Step 2: Write! My goal is 2,000 words a day, so a novel usually takes me less than two months to write. I also like to outline several chapters in advance so I have a plan (and I recommend you be flexible because those plans OFTEN change!). Having a plan helps me get going, but the plan always shifts along the way. Go with the flow! Let the story and characters take you where they may. If you get blocked, take a step back, find a new creative outlet for a bit, or skip over the tough section and come back to it.

Step 3: Take a break! Once you finish, take a few days off, maybe a week. Get some distance from the story. Charge your creative batteries before you come back to it.

Step 4: Revision. Read through your story. Make any changes that are necessary. I used to rewrite an entire draft of my stories, but I don't need to do that anymore. I've been writing over a decade, so my skill has greatly improved! If you're a new writer, I definitely recommend writing a second draft once you know more about your story and where it's going.

Step 5: Get another perspective. Give your book to beta readers and critique partners and editors. Make sure other people look at your book. You're going to send it out there at some point... might as well start with something helpful. Editors and beta readers can help you craft your story. They'll point out things you couldn't see before. Trust me! This is super necessary!

Step 6: Editing. Read through your book again. Send it to an editor. Do not skip this part. Even professional editors get their books looked at by someone else. You can't see your own work clearly.

Step 7: Celebrate! You've officially written, re-written, revised, and edited an entire novel! πŸ˜„
