This week's tip is on: The Basics of Traditional Publishing!
Obviously, I know more about indie publishing, but I thought I'd go over traditional publishing and how it's different.
For starters, traditional publishing means getting your book published through one of the big five publishers. They have a much greater reach than indie publishing - more support, a bigger team, and more connections. But the odds of getting picked up by an agent - and then picked up by a big five publisher - are slim. Especially these days, when the market is so saturated with new authors.
With indie publishing, you set your own timeline and have more control. But your reach isn't as big. If you publish traditionally, the process is this: find a literary agent, sign a contract, go through editing with the literary agency, the agent shops your book around to publishers, if one of them wants it then the agent helps negotiate a contract for you, then you start the slow, slow process of publishing. Seriously, sometimes it takes years. Again, this is why I prefer indie publishing π
Also, getting a publishing deal for one book or series doesn't guarantee your career as an author. I've heard stories of authors who get a great deal and an impressive advance, but then the book launch falls flat, and the publisher drops them. So yeah, it's great at first, but it's not sustainable unless you keep getting more contracts and more deals.
