This segment is for those of you who are writing and looking to improve! Please keep in mind I am not an expert by any means, but I do have a lot of experience that I would love to share with you! π
This week's tip: Characterization
When I first started writing, my characters were always too bland. They didn't have a personality beyond the plot--their entire existence revolved around whatever the story was throwing at them.
When I was writing Twisted by Time, a beta reader told me Desi needed a hobby. She needed something besides magic to get her excited. She had to be more three-dimensional. So, I made her a dancer. I gave her a love of ballet that fueled her to cast that spell--so she could run away and join a ballet company. She uses dancing later on in the series for stress-coping and demon-hunting. Adding that passion helped develop her personality into a free spirit, strong and graceful, and now I can't picture her without it!
Give your characters hobbies, flaws, and quirks! Make them as unique as you are π
