Behind The Scenes
Ready for a story? Well, here we go... a true story of the canine I named my character Fred the dog after in the Megan Henny series.
(which you can find HERE).
I really don't know what would have happened that night if my neighbor's dog hadn't jumped the fence. There are a lot of horrible things I can imagine, but thanks to Fred (the real-life version) I'm here to write stories and raise my family. The winters are cold and long here. Well... maybe not compared to some of you, but I grew up in Northern California so they FEEL really cold and long to me. Being cramped up inside isn't what I'm used to. So in the neighborhood where I used to live, I spent a lot of nights walking circles around the block. That way I wasn't too far from home if my family needed me (no one else wanted to walk around in the freezing cold... and I don't really blame them). So, one night I was out walking. It was completely dark and I was only two houses away from my home when a car pulled up to the sidewalk.
"Want to hang out tonight?" the driver shouted.
I quickly glanced at the car to see it was full of guys, but I couldn't tell their ages. I teach a class of younger teens and it looked to similar to one of their cars, so I thought maybe they were messing with me. But before I could figure it out, my neighbor's dog jumped right over their half-fence and I turned around to face the dog. "Fred, what are you doing?"
But Fred didn't even look at me. He ran across the grass and sat down right next to me, looking out at the street.
I turned back to the car to see these weren't the young teens I assumed they were. It was three men and they'd all opened their doors and stepped out of the car. But they were looking back at Fred. It was a terrifying second and a half where I instantly realized what was going on, and I was speechless.
They got back in their car without a word and drove off.
And I dropped to my knees and hugged that dog so hard. "I love you, Fred," I whispered. By now I was shaking and trying not to think of the situation I might have been in at that moment without Fred. He has since passed away, but he's my hero forever.
There you have it. My favorite character unmasked. :) Have any of you had similar experiences? Has an animal saved your life or warned you of danger? Dogs especially are such amazing creatures and, if treated well, they love unconditionally and live to protect and serve their owners. ❤️
If you haven't read it yet, CLICK HERE to read a free novella in the Megan Henny series starring Megan and Fred. A stormy tavern and creepy ghost story start off this one... don't miss it!
