So one thing you get after daydreaming about a world for almost two years straight is some random facts and side stories. Not all of them will become relevant (In fact, I figure most of them won't), but I like having them in the back of my mind to explain character motivations.
The one I'm sharing with you today is about Slingshot.
So in the first book, we learned that Slingshot got her name because she used to use enchanted metal pellets and hurl them at demons. This would distract them enough that other team members could take them out. She wore a cape (CAUSE HEROES WEAR CAPES) and basically looked cool.
But she moved to close range and had to lose her cape (a sad time for everyone involved), and though you could figure it out with the information given, I thought I'd state it here:
She had to change to melee because she got divorced.
Okay, so stick with me here. Slingshot is an enchanter, which is one of the higher-paying jobs in the undercity (the other one is water magic, which I think gets explained in book 2). While she was married, their dual wage kept them comfortable, and she can spend her magic on other things. Once she's on her own (with her kids) suddenly money becomes a problem and she has to increase her output in her day job, leaving less magic for her night job.
Since it's less magic (overall) to enchant a magic sword and stab things than constantly using magic to create enchanted metal pellets/bullets and melt them on demons, she does, and alters her fighting style accordingly, meaning she needs to (tragically) lose her cape.
Will this ever become relevant? Look probably not. It's the random backstory for a side character that happened about six years before the opening of the story, so there's a good chance it will never be explained. It will just sit in the back of my head, providing random motivation for some of the things Slingshot and Overpower do.
(If anyone cares, they're also rarely ever seen as heroes on the same night cause one of them will have the kids (Exception to this is book 3/3.5). This is also random, and will probably never matter.)
But if I have to know it, now so do you.
