Something about Anna

There's a trope I hate in YA fantasy

image

Hello ,

So there's this common trope in YA fantasy (a subset of the chosen one trope I think) that after a character struggles with having no magic for a while (or is otherwise handicapped against all their peers) they discover that their magic isn't what they thought it was, and they are in fact the most special/magical of them all.

For all you wondering, this will never happen to Anna.

Oh, I considered it. There was a period of brainstorming that had her magic being an unclassified "void" type. She didn't understand that she was actually making nothing and then the wind was rushing in to fill the void, and so she thought she had minor wind magic. She was going to discover this somewhere around book 8 (when some other stuff went down).

Again, just pointing out, I am not doing that.

Why you ask? Because Anna's good enough without it. To me, Anna is the kid who was too tall to be a good gymnast but decides to do it anyway. She's the kid who can't run fast, so they teach themselves to run long. They may never win the race, but they'll complete every marathon. There's a certain strength in deciding that you weren't given the advantage you wanted, but damn it, you're going to do it anyway.

I put Anna through a lot of hell in these books - her bad decisions are a part of it - so I wanted to set your expectations early. If you're in this waiting for Anna to get the magic she so desperately deserves... it's not gonna happen.

Just wanted to note it, before we get to 3.5 because the theme of the story deals with some of this.

For those of you now on holidays, stay safe this summer. I'm dealing with thunderstorms and hail so it's hot chocolate and a good book for me.

Books you should check out:

Cascade of Sparks (Valley Glen Elves Book 1) by [Mary Su]

Cascade of Sparks:

Born with the ability to see magic, Zaria hides her gifts in an attempt to fit in with her elven community. It’s easier to focus on school and go with the flow. She’s not one to speak up, especially not for the new elf from the Imperial Center who is as infuriating as he is handsome.

Jovan is new to the valley, and he's never quite fit in. His ambitions are bigger than life in a small town, and he’ll do what it takes to go after them. Never one to hold back, he calls Zaria out on her refusal to stand up for the truth—and sparks fly.

When Jovan finds himself framed for a crime he didn’t commit, only Zaria’s unique gift can save him. They’ll have to work together to clear his name. Will Zaria risk everything to save Jovan, or will she leave him at the mercy of his accusers?

Book Cover

Caged Butterfly:

I can’t believe I got caught after a short-lived taste of freedom from my royal duties of palace life. My captors have a hidden agenda to annihilate my home. I must fight… too bad my Fae shifter power only turns me into a kaleidoscope of butterflies. SO not intimidating.

I find help from some unpredictable sources, and my heart flutters at the sight of one strong man. We watch desperately as the armies start marching towards my forest.

On one hand, I am free with a budding love forming; on the other, the destruction of my Fae colony.

Can I warn my family in time to prevent a war? Will I find my own happy ending before my wings are plucked?
