As believers we like to apply the big stuff like Salvation, and sanctification, but we treat most of Christian obedience and discipleship as just not that important. We don’t expend the effort to retain the entirety of Christ’s teachings. We are casual in our approach to seriously following Jesus, and we don’t even realize we are half baked in our efforts of being His disciple.
A few weeks ago I was at the coffee shop and struck up a conversation with a fireman studying for the lieutenant’s rank. He had notebooks piled and was very serious. He knew his job involves saving peoples lives and property. Could we be that serious in learning and obeying Jesus because we are involved in ultimate life and death issues?
That fireman was studying alone. We are called to grow together in our love and obedience. Paul was writing to the church at Colossae a church knit together in love. They seriously pursued Jesus and the result was hearts overflowing with thanksgiving. It sounds like a church that was spiritually growing.
