As I wait for a daughter’s event at a track meet I reflect on this verse. The runners around the track make a final dash to the finish line. They are running for a perishable prize, and boy do they run. In High School there is a beauty in running for the glory of the moment. It prepares them for the race of life in a tangible way, but they have to translate that physical experience into a spiritual discipline. Jesus calls us to pursue God with all that we have. We are to “press on” and "strain forward.” It requires a forgetting of what was in your life. What were you doing in your past that captured your attention more than Jesus? Those days are over because they are replaced with the joy of a compelling vision of Jesus and His kingdom. Someone lies ahead for us. Jesus. He is the exciting future for us, and He is our goal and prize. Much like my kids would greet me when I returned from a trip. They would see me and run to me. When they got close enough I would bend down and catch them, then hug them and kiss them. Getting to Jesus is the goal, and when we do, He is the prize. Run to him like these high school students.
