Neighbors are a blessing and a challenge. Throughout the Old Testament there was an understanding that the neighbor relationship was the challenge to individuals and nations. It may seem surprising that Paul sums up the law in regards to treatment of your neighbor. He says that the love of neighbor is the chief indicator of your devotion to God. Apparently our love for neighbor is a byproduct of our genuine love for God.

The reason is clear. Sin infects all of our earthly relationships, and is constantly degrading our relationships. Loving your neighbor that has sinned against you is only possible if two conditions exist: First your relationship to God must be assured because you have confessed your sin and experienced forgiveness. Experiencing total forgiveness frees you up to forgive others when they sin against you. Secondly, you must experience total love from a God who knows you thoroughly. When God loves you while still knowing all your faults you are then compelled to obey Him. The God of love commands you to love your neighbor. Wanting the best for your neighbor is what Paul is communicating.

O forgiven one, O loved by God, Do you love your neighbor?
