Today's Devotion - April 2nd

As a young man I worked for a great man, my dad. He cared for his employees, customers and suppliers. As his son, I truly appreciated his way with people. He cared deeply for his people, and that care was reciprocated. That is the picture here in this passage. God is actually our ultimate employer. Sure, I worked for my dad, but I really worked for God. How can that be? Well, as we consider who made us and for what purpose we were made, then it makes sense. God created us, and he gave us work for our good. In work we express our purpose. Work predates the curse. Adam worked in the garden. Tending the garden was his daily purpose.
This verse is given to people who had the worst boss imaginable. I would never want to be owned by another person. Slave owners have no incentive to treat you well. In that situation, the only incentive to work heartily is to avoid the whip or beating. Even so, Paul commands the slave to work heartily. Paul calls all worker’s attention back to the Lord. As you work today, imagine Jesus is in the room with you. Then work hard for your King.
Blessings,
Pastor Jim
