Jesus is teaching His disciples and He makes the statement regarding being first in this world and His pronouncement seems opposite to reality. As I was reading the account of Joseph in Genesis 39 I was struck by the idea that he had had a dream that made him ruler over his brothers, yet the story today is one of him being a slave to Potiphar and then being thrown into prison. His dream and reality were distantly removed from each other. However, Joseph saw it at the time; we know that the time of service and the time in prison prepared him for his future as second in the kingdom. Joseph did not elevate himself nor put himself forward in the story. His advancement can only be attributed to God.

What about you? Are you working in a job that feels more like bonded servitude? Do you see no room for advancement in this world. The sovereign God is caring for you and allowing you the position of first. You are first in God’s kingdom, and that is good. Today could be designed to awaken you to the true values in Christ’s kingdom.
