i started emceeing at 15 years old - here's why

Dear ,
I've likely met over 100 new people in the past year so far.
Every single time I share that I've been emceeing professionally for 10 years, I see a look of confusion, followed by "if you don't mind me asking... how old are you?"
Well, I started as a volunteer emcee for grassroots events when I was 15, before charging consistently for bigger and bigger events at 18 years old.
It sounds impressive and all, but the reason why I started emceeing isn't so impressive.
Young Rae just wanted to feel seen, heard, and valued
I didn't do well in school, nor was I the most popular kid in class. I yearned to be seen, to be good at something.
When the opportunity came, I took it.
What I didn't realise then was this - When the need for validation was my motivation for emceeing, it was a never ending cycle of hustle and comparison. I never felt enough.
Thankfully, a few traumatic incidents "forced" me to reassess my motivations, and eventually led me back to my inner voice.
Here's the thing though, till this day, I've met:
- Entrepreneurs who are marketing from a place of lack and fear -- causing their marketing to reek of desperation
- Mentors who have the wealth of experience, but mentor from a place of control and ego -- they want their mentee to take their advice, or they'll be affected
- Rising leaders who, despite their true passion and conviction for their work, are distracted by the chase, the hustle, the vanity metrics -- leaving them tired and frustrated.
Here's a truth we need to know:
You simply cannot change someone. And neither can someone change you. It is completely up to you - you have the agency to create compelling change in your life.
Others can create the spark, but you need to light the fire. When we know this, we stop being so attached to the advice we give and good we do.
In today's noisy and distracting world, connecting deeply with our inner voice is more important than ever
I recently guested on a phenomenal podcast with a truly inspiring woman. "You Never Know" created and hosted by Nicole.
I go deep into my story:
- Starting out as an emcee at 15, driven by my deep craving to be seen and heard
- The TRUTH about living on external validation
- My experience joining an MLM (Multi-level Marketing) and how it's shaped my life
- What happens when mentorship becomes toxic, and why you should never choose other's advice over your inner voice
- and much much more ...
I also share about speaking, Owning Your Voice, and building a brand that cuts through the noise.
Honestly, it was a bit scary for me to be on a live podcast after a long while, but I'm still really proud of how this ep turned out. We touched on some vulnerable topics.
