Identity Shift: How to *actually* do it

"I know the steps I should take, but when I'm asked to present, I just blank out and go to fight or flight! I don't know how to stop reacting this way."


This was what a participant shared with me during our recent workshop.


One of the activities was to identify what are some heavy thoughts holding us back from showing up the way we want to, before writing down some identity and truth statements to anchor on in order to start the identity shifting process.


"My current identity is feeling like I'm not enough. I don't know how to shift out of that."


Does this resonate with you? Perhaps deep down you find yourself thinking:

  • I'm not good enough to be in this company/role, what if people find out?
  • I'm not experienced enough to work with this calibre of a client, what if I don't deliver?
  • I don't have enough time to start on my personal branding, what if it doesn't lead to any results?


We know that these thoughts are not helpful and have kept us stuck right where we are for months, maybe even years!


So how can we *actually* shift our identity?

1️⃣ Choose better thoughts


First step is to choose better thoughts. Our thoughts influence our energy, and our energy will inevitably seep into our actions (or lack of action).


But shifting from "I'm not good enough" to "I AM good enough" is a pretty far leap. How?


Well, you don't have to take a huge leap. Just find a 1% belief that you can anchor on, that will bring you 1 step closer to a stronger identity.


Some thoughts you can try out are:

  • "I am learning to embrace who I am"
  • "I can serve and add value at the level that I'm at"
  • "I am committed to my growth each day"


These thoughts are definitely way better than "I'm not good enough"


2️⃣ Take actions your next-level identity would take


Personally I find step 2 easier, because I can move my physical body to do something even if my mind doesn't want to.


If you want to overcome your fear of speaking up at social events, you don't need to throw yourself in the deep end and attend a 300 person networking event. Take one small step. It could be:

  • Leading a conversation for at least 3 mins when you're having lunch with your colleagues
  • Starting a pantry conversation with someone new (you just have to do it for 2 mins!)
  • Attend a social gathering where you share the same common interest as the rest of the group. At least you know you'll have something to talk about!


For a few of the participants who came for my workshop, their 1% action step is in signing up for the workshop, staying back for 10 mins to chat with others and ask me questions, and for some of them, they booked discovery calls with me.


This is commitment to shifting into your next level identity. You can't just think your way to a new identity. You need to commit to a set of actions that inevitably lead you to your next level identity.
