When I was 21, I got exposed to the world of personal development and entrepreneurship.

3-4 times a week, for a few hours each time, I'll be hanging out with both entrepreneurs in their 50s + young driven peers who are side-hustling while studying. Their though processes rubbed off on me.

At that point in time I was too young to know how to think for myself. So there were times I took good advice that wasn't good for me, and it left me in shambles.

What I've learnt is this: not all good company is good for you. You gotta learn how to think for yourself, build a deep trust with your voice, so you can naturally curate the communities you enter.

First and foremost, I needed to do this: To give myself permission to prioritise my safety and joy over any "business"/practical benefits.

With that foundational understanding, I then keep these 3 steps in mind.

Step 1: Check in with my Intention(s) for this season. Rank these intentions based on priority.

i.e.

• To meet other founders in X industry, or in X point in their business journey
• To connect with people I vibe with outside my job/ industry
• To meet potential collaborators or community leaders
• To have good conversations that inspire me
• To focus on business goals and growing visibility

Step 2: When an event comes by, I ask myself: 

Step 3: How can I bring my best energy to the event?

Based on my intentions, how can I prepare?

• If there are potential business opportunities or collaborators, I’ll practice my self-intro
• If the event is right after a busy work day, I’ll do a short 3 min grounding and breathing exercise so I come into the event light and present
• If it’s more formal business networking, I’ll prepare my state of mind, perhaps think of some perspectives and opinions I could share in discussions

Yknow, recent conversations reminded me of how blessed I am.

For 4 years now, I haven’t felt too lonely because of the AMAZING friends and communities I’ve had.

I met a few people recently that reminded me of how this is not the norm— having a group of people who support AND challenge/expand you is a blessing not everybody has.

Personally, I experienced my most life-changing shifts when I met that ONE person, at that ONE event, and had that ONE conversation. I may not meet them again, but my life is forever altered for good.
