Hi, wonderful people!
I'm late sending out this message this week, but you'll be glad to know that's because I've been powering through to the end of Burning Season over the last couple of days! Yay! I'm fixing a few things in the draft and then sending it to my beta reader on Friday. The editor is scheduled for the first week of August, so I'll be rushing to incorporate beta feedback and finish my own final editing pass, but I like to work in a short and intense period at this point in the book, so that should be plenty of time to have it ready for edits.
This means we're just a few weeks away from having early review copies ready! I can't wait to see what you all think of Dylan and Bo.
Thanks to those who helped me me brainstorm celebration ideas for my upcoming publication anniversary on August 11. The winner of my random drawing from all the submitted forms was Liza with a Z! Congrats, Liza! Reply to this email and I'll get your e-book to you.
What I'm reading
I've been treating myself to a teeny bit of reading at bedtime, but I haven't made a lot of progress, through no fault of the books! When I do finish something, I'll definitely tell you about it. ;)
What I'm writing
As I mentioned above, I'm finishing up the draft of Burning Season, which is book three in the Wild Ones series. But it isn't the story of any of Robbie's brothers, as you can tell from the description on the pre-order.
Several readers have asked, who is Dylan Chase in relationship to Robbie, Johnny, and Danny? I'm not going to answer that question in this email, but it will be answered by the book itself.
If who've read Long Winter and Signs of Spring, I bet the last thing you expected from the next book in the series was to travel back in time fifty years and meet another generation of Chases... BUT, I really think you're going to love it!
I included some of my favorite tropes in Burning Season, and one of them is: there was only one bed! Read on for a sneak peek from that scene in an early chapter of the book. :)
When Dylan came out of the bathroom after his shower, Bo was sitting on the edge of the bed. He’d shed his hat and had started to unbutton his shirt. His boots were rowed neatly by the nightstand. Bo’s gaze swept over Dylan, and lingered where his T-shirt clung to his damp chest. In return, Dylan found himself staring at Bo’s feet, which were long and narrow with slightly crooked big toes. Just feet, but because they were Bo’s feet, Dylan stared.
“Guess it’s my turn.” Bo stood up slowly. And, fuck, he was tall.
Dylan blinked up at him. “Okay.”
Bo kept looking at him for a long moment, and anything he’d asked for or tried to do, Dylan would have helplessly welcomed. That was the power of having Bo’s attention. It made Dylan want to do anything necessary to keep it.
The time has come for the next newsletter serial!
Back in June, subscriber votes decided the next newsletter serial! If you’re new to the mailing list or didn’t get swept up in the “pilot season” vote, here’s a little information about the top vote-earner, Night and Day…
Ty’s parents seem to have their shit together, and his little brothers are old enough that he doesn’t have to constantly worry about them anymore. He could finally transition to full-time college classes, if he could find an overnight job that won’t kill him. One where he might be able to study occasionally, or catch a nap. When he sees the advertisement for a night nanny, he knows there’s no one better for the job. Didn’t he practically raise his brothers? And the pay and hours make it the perfect gig to balance against full-time classes.
Maybe Ty is more sleep-deprived than he’s ever been in his life—little Isabel isn’t much of a sleeper—but he’s always adored babies, and can’t believe he’s getting paid to hang out with one for the handful of hours she’s awake, and to spread out his text books on the coffee table when she’s asleep. And if he’s having some seriously sinful thoughts about Isabel’s handsome, melancholy father—well. His thing for older men is nothing new, and he can keep himself under control for the half-hour their paths cross in the morning and evening.
Jonathan is overwhelmed by his wife leaving abruptly—though, to be honest, he’d known it was over for years—by the new responsibilities he’s just been handed at his law firm, and by the baby daughter he adopted three months ago, Isabel. The baby his now-vanished wife had been begging for. He was lucky to get a place for Isabel in the best infant care program in the city, but it closes at 5 p.m. Before Isabel, Jonathan had never held a baby or changed a diaper. He needs help day and night.
When Ty answers his advertisement, and he looks past the tattoos and piercings at the way Ty expertly soothes the baby, Jonathan hires him on the spot. The only problem in the weeks that follow is how much Jonathan begins to look forward to Ty’s arrival every night, and not just because he’s ready to hand over the baby and get some sleep. There’s something that fascinates him about the young man who steps out of the darkness late each night with a crooked smile.
When Isabel's daycare closes unexpectedly, a desperate Jonathan asks Ty if he can work more hours. Ty says he can—if he can crash in the guest room, too.
Now that Burning Season has been drafted, the time has come for Night and Day. 😍
Months back I set up a discord server for my writing on a whim. I haven’t known the right way to utilize it so I never shared the server anywhere. Recently, though, I decided that a fun way to take advantage of discord's particular features would be to “live write” the newsletter serial chapters in the server. I’ll then give them a quick edit and share them on the newsletter in their entirety.
If this sounds fun to you, or if you enjoy discord and just want to chat with me there, here’s the invite to the server.
