Dear ,

I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to provide you with an update on the ongoing strike at the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and to offer some guidance on how to navigate this situation as smoothly as possible.

As you may already know, over 35,000 CRA employees have been on strike since April 19, 2023, seeking higher wages and better job security. This labour disruption could delay tax return processing and extend call centre wait times.

Despite these challenges, filing your taxes by the April 30, 2023 deadline (June 15 for self-employed individuals without tax owing) is still essential. However, to minimize potential delays and inconvenience, I strongly recommend taking the following steps:

  • File your taxes online: Electronic filing is typically processed faster, taking up to 2 weeks compared to 8 weeks for paper filing. Tax software like TurboTax can help expedite the process and prevent the backlog caused by the strike.
  • Submit your return early: Filing early is crucial if you owe taxes, as it will help you avoid penalties for late filing.
  • Keep copies of all documents: If you must file by mail, keep copies of all your tax documents and use proper postage.
  • Prepare for call centre delays: If you need to contact the CRA for assistance, expect longer wait times. Alternatively, our team of tax experts is available to assist you with any questions or concerns.
  • Monitor your tax return status: Log into your CRA MyAccount to keep track of your return's progress.
  • Due to the active CRA strike, the Business Inquiry Line (1-800-959-5525) is closed. The recorded message directs callers to use their online services.

We can also help you set up a My Business Account or My Account with the CRA. This account provides secure and convenient online access to your business account information, allows you to manage your tax affairs, and enables you to access a range of online services that help you stay compliant and current with your tax obligations.

Due to the strike, the CRA has not extended the tax filing deadline, so it is crucial to be proactive and file your taxes as soon as possible. Additionally, please note that the 2022 tax year has brought several changes that could impact your tax situation, such as new credits, deductions, and adjustments to tax brackets. Our team is well-equipped to ensure you are well-informed and prepared to take advantage of these updates.

In conclusion, while the CRA strike may create some challenges during the tax filing season, please rest assured that our team is committed to providing you with the support and guidance you need to minimize disruptions. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you require any assistance or have any questions about your tax situation.

Thank you for your continued trust in our services.

Best regards,

Quinte Business Accounting Team
