Our Students Just Conducted Their First Live Elicitation With a Real Client

Hi ,

I have to tell you what happened in our program this week.

Our students conducted a live elicitation session with a real client.

Not a role play.

Not a case study.

A real business owner with a real problem sitting across from our students, answering their questions, sharing their challenges.

And the energy in that room was something else.

Our students came prepared.

They had planned their session, built an agenda, and crafted questions to help them understand the client's problem deeply.

They did quite well for their first time and excited to see them get better.

But what happened in the debrief afterwards is what I really want to share with you.

One participant shared that it was their first time ever interacting live with a real stakeholder.

Not in a simulation.

Not in a classroom exercise.

A real person, with a real business, depending on them to ask the right questions.

That moment that first real interaction is something no textbook can give you.

Another participant made great observation.

She noticed that most of the challenges the client raised were not day-to-day operational issues, they were more strategic, around:.

Revenue assurance and growth.

Profitability.

Business growth.

And she asked: how do we as Business Analysts help solve that?

I loved that question.

Because that is exactly the kind of thinking that separates good BAs from great ones.

Here is what I shared with the team:

Stakeholders are often strategic.

They are thinking about revenue, growth, and profitability.

It is our job as Business Analysts to connect the dots to look at the day-to-day operational activities and see how they tie to those bigger goals.

To find the gaps.

To surface the opportunities.

That is where our value lives.

And then there was this: the team had already done their initial stakeholder identification before the session.

But after just one interview with the client, they uncovered additional stakeholders they had not identified before.(progressive elaboration)

That is real Business Analysis at work.

Now here is where it gets even more interesting.

After grounding our students in the core BA principles behind elicitation, the frameworks, the techniques, the thinking, we then showed them how to use AI responsibly to accelerate the process.

How to use AI to help structure their notes, identify patterns in what the client shared, and surface questions they may not have thought to ask.

But and this is critical only because they had already done the work themselves first.

They understood the principles.

So when AI gave them an output, they could evaluate it, refine it, and trust their own judgement over it.

This is how we teach.

Fundamentals first.

Practical application second.

AI acceleration third, responsibly, intentionally, and with full understanding of what is happening under the hood.

This is what I mean when I say we do practical training.

This is not us talking about elicitation, this is our students doing elicitation, getting feedback, and growing in real time.

And this is just the beginning.

Things are unraveling for this client and I am so excited to see where this project takes our learners.
