Zdravo !

That's Serbian for "hello" in case you're wondering. It's (hopefully) the final week of solid lockdown in Melbourne this weekend. Even though our case numbers are the highest they've ever been, the vaccination rates have been increasing leading to a chance that the state will re-open soon! How are things where you are? Let me know!

As always, a small favour, if I may? Could you forward this newsletter to just 3 people that you think would like one of the articles? It helps A LOT! If you're the friend reading this, click the link below to join! Glad to have you here!

In this week's email...

Week in the life

As I type this, the announcement that Victoria will come out of it's record breaking lockdown is just trickling through. I'm both excited and nervous given a) I REALLY need a haircut and b) our hospitals are REALLY full right now. Mainly I'm just looking forward to seeing my parents who live just outside the 15km travel radius whom I haven't seen in months...

The weather here has been chaotic to say the least! Just hours before this photo was taken, Melbourne was getting pelted by heavy rains and wind. It all settled down and became still by the time the afternoon came around.

That was fortunately since I have been spending way too much time indoors and learning Python again (see below). Currently, I'm learning how to recreate an iconic game...

A bit more of an update over on the blog...

Creative update

QuizGame

https://replit.com/@cyphix/Quiz-Game?v=1

imageThis week, I've spent my time going through the Python programming course. As you saw in the Weekly Summary, I'm currently coding up my own version of the Snake game. While I work on that, this was the result of one of the previous lessons: a quiz game! Click the "play" button and it'll load right up!

In other news, I started doing the little video snippets for the podcast. Some are up on the randInt instagram page.

Gadgets & Tech

Logitech MX Keys (~$170)

https://ebay.us/D7u3ct

imageI've never really appreciated the differences between various keyboards in the past. With my recent interest in coding, I can definitely see the benefits now!

I tried just writing some code on the laptop keyboard and immediately realised just how much more pleasant and convenient the Logitech one was comparatively.

When the pandemic first started, this was one of the first keyboard to sell out since it's so popular everywhere, including for the whole "Work From Home" times.

  • Floately Planters- One of my favourite lockdown purchases - levitating planters for my succulents!
  • Coffee warmer coaster - While I use the Ember mug, these coasters are much cheaper. I just doing like heating elements near my electronics, but considering they're ~$35, they might be an option for you

How a Pokemon clone is paying the rent (~6 mins)

imageWhat a world we live in!

It turns out there is a game that's somewhat a Pokemon clone that you can play that combines with the phenomenon that is NFTs. It's popular enough in SE Asia that there is a booming market for the NFTs generated from it are selling like hot cakes. What I found fascinating is how the game is helping people with no bank accounts pay their rent!

What I'm reading

  • Storyworthy - I've recently taken to doing the daily exercises in terms of collecting stories from the everyday. It really does change how you look at a day!

Watch

We're on top of the world (~1min)

https://youtu.be/uQHhYRuaEtM

imageAfter watching that, check out the behind the scenes, which was the main thing I wanted to show.

I find it quite amazing the lengths companies go to in pulling off some of these advertisements to catch our attention.

That said, I suppose this sort of thing wouldn't happen unless there was a reason to pay to organise all this! Would you stand on top of a tower that tall?

Quote I'm pondering

Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.
– Maya Angelou

Like most, I'm not a big fan of politics or politicians but lately I've been trying to see things from their point of view. Their job is to decide for a large group of people what the best course of action is based on consensus and also evidence. The larger the group, the larger the number of dissenting opinions.

It's in that context that this quote stood out. Information is only known prospectively. We can model/predict/pray but what unfolds is relatively unknown. When it comes to ourselves, we obviously appreciate that we don't know what the future holds. Somehow, we expect that those in positions of power have a superhuman ability to see further into the future...

Well , you're up to date on all the interesting things I've seen this week! What did you think of this week's newsletter? Feedback is always welcome!

Toodles!
