How are you ?

As I write this, Sydney and some other parts of Australia are entering lockdown yet again. While it's not good news, I'm relieved it's not Melbourne for once! 😂

Wherever you're reading this from, I hope that things are looking good and you're having a great weekend!

Just 1 week til Sunday Surprise turns 1! Still looking for more suggestions, so if you have any, please let me know via email!

As always, a small favour? Could you forward this newsletter to just 3 people that you think would like one of the articles? It helps A LOT! If you're the friend reading this, click the link below to join! Glad to have you here!

In this week's email...

Week in the life

Whew! It was busy work week this week with multiple days finishing past 1am! I'm never in a rush to do anything other than sleep when this happens. At least this time, it was doing robotic surgery one of the days. I made some Instagram stories about robotic cases. It's at the end of the Anaesthetic Lyfe series of stories.

Given the hectic start of the week, I decided to keep my days of free and rest up. It was very much needed. As I type this, I've had a very lazy day of housework and drinking lots of coffee. I finally got around to editing just ONE photo from the US trip a few years ago...

image

I did turn this into a mini "how I edit" set of stories too. Clearly been in a teaching frame of mind today! Here's some a still from the Instagram Story...

I might put the rest of the story as a tutorial and cat updates on the blog so not as to take up too much room here...

On the note of the blog, I know there was an issue last week. Thank you to those who reached out to let me know! Should be fixed now, otherwise try the non-SSL link: Photos x Raffy

Creative

I haven't done any final edits or started any new projects that I can announce. I did however, fly my drone this afternoon and get some great shots in the golden hour!

Here's a small preview.

Gadgets & Tech

SanDisk USB-C & USB-A Flash Drive (~$20)

https://amzn.to/3vYPJXO

imageIt's nearly the end of the financial year, so I have been buying little tid-bits for work. This is something that is AWESOME. Currently, half the devices I use have the new style USB-C port and the other sort have the old rectangular USB-A and I hate carrying cables/adapters to make things work.

This Flash drive has both ports on either end! GENIUS!

PREVIOUS/OTHER PRODUCTS

Some previous things that have been featured:

  • Lyre's Non-alcoholic spirits - Never thought I'd remotely be learning about mocktails, but Lyre's ones have got me curious. You can get 10% off if you sign up to their newsletter too.
  • Nord VPN - Keep safe on the internet with a secure VPN. This is the cheapest but still reliable VPN that I've tested.

Read

Nirvana fallacy (~3 mins)

https://yandoo.wordpress.com/2013/12/10/perfect-solution-fallacy/

imageI was having a debate about the various interventions in terms of keeping the community safe with regard to Covid-19 and realised that when people come to heated disagreements, they seem to fall back more and more on fallacious arguments (myself included).

Blind spots are difficult to identify in one's own thinking so I decided to look up various logical fallacies and the Nirvana fallacy (or perfect solution fallacy) seems to be one being used quite frequently by anti-vaxers and those against Covid related restrictions. Just thought it was an interesting quick read.

Book I'm re-reading:

  • The 4-hour body - I'm revisiting this one from Tim Ferriss again to go over the rules of the Slow-carb diet to refresh on the premises and get back into weight training. I've tried no carb/ keto in the past which works really well for me, but my current work schedule means that I don't readily have appropriate foods available and this might be a bit easier to follow.

Watch

Squirrel Ninja Warrior (~10-20min)

https://youtu.be/hFZFjoX2cGg

imageWhat happens when an ex-NASA engineer make an obstacle course for squirrels?

Well, I suppose this video is what results.

It's a very cute intro into what a talented engineer can construct as a hobby project.

Random fact

History of retirement (~4mins)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_retirement

I've always wondered how long the concept of "retiring" was around. Firstly, I don't want to be be tired again, so always found the word "re-tire" an odd choice and also thought that cavemen surely didn't have pension funds!

Turns out for some vocations like being soldiers, the concept is as old as Ancient Rome. In the modern day concept, the idea started to take hold around ~120 years ago.

Quote I'm pondering

“Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little.”

- Edmund Burke

This quote came from the article on the Nirvana fallacy. Perfectionist often use this as the reason to not get started and as I look back at nearly a year of the Sunday Surprise, I'm glad I got started when I did. Next week I'll show you what the first newsletter looked like and just how different the content and structure is now.

For a seemingly small project, it has changed quite a bit in my opinion! It came down to just starting with something "good enough" and refining it...

It's still not there yet, hence I always ask for feedback, but it's much better than never starting in the first place.

Do you have a project or task like this? One where you're avoiding taking the next step because it might not be perfect?

, that's all for this week! Don't forget to send me your suggestions for how to celebrate the 1st birthday of The Sunday Surprise newsletter next week!
