Week in the life
After every lockdown, there is always a period of feasting and the last week and a bit has been just that. After sending out the last newsletter, I went to try the burgers at Easey's, a restaurant that is built using old trains lifted on top of a building!
It was such a novel experience and I'm surprised I haven't been earlier since it's been there for years! It also felt all too familiar considering these were the style of trains I used to catch everyday when I was in university.
Food has been a central theme this week. Last night was yet another dinner with a group of friends. This time, it was Korean fried chicken. And a first for me: chicken fondue!
Not my usual style. However, after all the eating, I feel like I need to be on cholestrol tablets and maybe go see a heart specialist...
A little bit more over on the blog...
Creative update
randInt 019 - Catamaran man & cooking curry (~40min)
https://open.spotify.com/episode/2EECliEIpYIAI6vFSX4Fbi?si=5a1c883730d94cd4
Chandra is finally back on solid ground and the next episode of the podcast is here!
It was a couple of days late, but in this episode, we discuss the pros and cons of boat life, what it's been like looking after Covid patients (after the interest in last week's article), new cooking recipes and a bunch more random things that sits quite "on-brand" as a random podcast!
If you listen on the Spotify app, there's also a new Q&A segment that we're trying out.
Gadgets & Tech
Handheld massage gun (~$99)
After hearing reviews on the TheraGun, I decided to dip my toes in the craze and give it a try given I had some neck and back pain the past few days. I ended up buying this cheaper Homedics one and so far, it's been great!
It's compact, charged via USB and after about 10mins of use, actually made my neck feel much better. I think the better specc'd ones have quieter and more forceful motors and better batteries, but for the price, I was impressed.
- Ecovac Robot vacuum - This is the robovac I have and it's AWESOME! Currently on special for a very low price.
- Kindle Paperwhite (2021)- The best e-book reader in my opinion, now with USB-C and warm backlighting to read late at night
Read
The genetic fluke that enabled us to drink milk (~6min)
Humans are quite unique in that a high percentage of the species retains the ability to drink link and process lactose into adulthood unlike most other animals.
This is an excerpt from a book looking at the different evolutionary adaptations and how the genes that allow us to process milk might've come about. Looks like before milk, the ancient farmers were making cheese instead...
What I'm reading
- Dune - Still enjoying this novel and how it's shaping up, but have been told that I should go watch the movie first! I'll keep reading til it comes out in the cinemas here.
Watch
Melbourne's green spine (~10min)
This week, here's a video about a new building that's coming close to home in Melbourne! Dubbed 'the green spine', it'll be Australia's tallest building and also feature a vertical garden throughout the length of the buildings!
It promises to change the skyline of Melbourne and I'm sure it'll become a new icon worldwide.
Quote I'm pondering
“The most powerful person in the world is the storyteller. The storyteller sets the vision, values and agenda for an entire generation”
– Steve Jobs
Especially with the way the world reacted to the pandemic, it's made me realise the central place that stories have in the human condition. There were plenty of facts to be found. Hell, with the internet, it's not hard to look up reputable and verified information on just about everything.
Yet, the story of vaccines enabling 5G (how this makes sense or works is beyond me, but I actually want to hear a version of the explanation!) or the many MANY other tales that unfolded goes to show that the information MUST come with a compelling story. That and the faith in the old stories of the rule of law, belief in objective reality and so forth is starting to fade.
Looks like Steve Jobs was very early in knowing what an important part they play...
That's all that I have for you this week ! Hope you enjoyed the newsletter. As always, I simply LOVE hearing from you and your opinions. Feedback is always welcome!
Stay safe!
