Your Guide to a Smooth Home Insurance Inspection
Hi ,
When applying for or renewing a homeowner’s insurance policy, your insurer may require a home inspection. This helps ensure your property meets safety standards and is properly insured for its true condition. Knowing what to expect can make the process easier—and give you peace of mind.
Here’s what typically happens during an insurance inspection:
Exterior Check
Inspectors will examine the roof, siding, gutters, foundation, windows, and doors. They’re looking for wear and tear, damage, or signs of risk like missing shingles or cracks.
Interior Review (Sometimes Required)
Depending on the insurer, they may check your electrical, plumbing, HVAC systems, water heater, and for signs of leaks or mold. Homes with older systems may be flagged for updates.
Safety Features
Working smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and carbon monoxide detectors are key. Your inspector may also check railings, stairs, and security systems.
Pet & Liability Risks
Own a dog? Insurers may take note of the breed due to liability concerns. Pools, trampolines, or wood-burning stoves will also be evaluated for risk.
What You Can Do to Prepare:
- Clear access to key areas (like the attic, basement, and electrical panel)
- Tidy up the yard and remove any obvious hazards
- Make minor repairs ahead of time
- Ensure safety features are functioning
Why It Matters:
The results of the inspection can affect your coverage, premiums, or even eligibility. A clean inspection helps keep your rates stable—and your home safer.
