What helps you stay steady and kind—even when it’s hard?

Dear friends,
In a time when the world can often feel overwhelming, I find myself returning to a simple question: What helps me stay steady and kind, even when things are hard?
For me, one of the most powerful tools has been the practice of Nonviolent Communication (NVC). It’s not just a way of speaking—it’s a way of listening, of being, of staying rooted in compassion and truth.
I can’t imagine raising two young children, let alone navigating the world today, without NVC. Whether we’re parenting, partnering, working, or organizing for change, our communication shapes our relationships and determines our impact. It’s a core life skill—and one that can transform everything when cultivated with depth and intention.
That’s why I’m inviting you to join me for one (or both) of the two online programs I co-lead with my dear friend and colleague Dr. Roxy Manning.
Online | August 21–24
This 4-day retreat offers a welcoming introduction to the heart of NVC. We’ll slow down together, explore the core principles, and practice staying connected to what matters most—even in the midst of challenges.
This retreat is ideal if you’re newer to NVC or want a fresh, embodied experience of the practice. Come reconnect with your values, soften your heart, and replenish your inner resources.
Online | September 2025 – April 2026
A longer-term training that meets one weekend a month for eight months, this program offers a comprehensive arc of learning: building foundational skills, exploring power and social conditioning, and integrating new capacities through coaching, practice, and community. If you’ve had some NVC training and are ready for deeper integration, this one’s for you.
Both programs include live sessions with me and Roxy, as well as small-group coaching with our experienced team of assistant trainers. These intimate circles offer rich opportunities for reflection, feedback, and real growth.
The two programs complement each other, and you’re welcome to join one or both of them.

In Memory
Let us pause to honor the life and work of Joanna Macy, who passed away last weekend. Joanna was a friend and teacher. Her bold voice and vision of the Great Turning continue to inspire and guide me. I’ll be sharing more soon in a future newsletter. May her memory be a blessing—and a call to love and protect this world more fiercely.
