Instagram LogoDon't wait until your baby's born to start supporting their development! Amazingly, what you do now helps build them helps them be the best form of themselves they can be! Second Trimester - creen time: Over the next 7 days, keep a record of how long you spend on any type of screen - at work and at home. Don't forget those times you are looking at your mobile phone or an iPad, or just watching the television. Why you are doing it: Many experts are concerned about the effect of screen time on the development of very young children. There is evidence that having a television on in a room makes it harder for a child to focus on interactive activities with others as they are distracted and less able to concentrate. Also, research has shown that listening to language on a screen does not replace the benefits of actual interaction with others - the development of language skills happens best when it is between people in the room rather than on the screen. Learning is encouraged through hands-on experience and interaction with others, rather than through passive watching of actions or talk on a screen. Young children need to be physically active - exploring and interacting with their physical environment. This is not encouraged by screen time. Overall, the advice is not to expose children under the age of two to screens as it may affect their development. One easy way to make this happen is to turn off the TV during the day. It makes a massive difference to your unborn baby as you will be more likely to chat to them and for your newborn or toddler, they will be less likely distracted by it! Spill the beans... how many hours do you spend in front of a screen? So far today I am on 2 hours and 20 mins on my phone alone and it's not even lunchtime as I write this!
