Let’s face it, each time you get a new writing device, you have to buy software to novel. Over the years, I think I have given Microsoft enough to fund a kidney transplant. Recently, I updated my computer gear, to a tablet with a touchable screen, it folds like a tablet and has a bunch of cool features. Immediately, when I went to open a document, I received the 365 notification.
I don’t want it.
I have the Office Suite on my desktop, my Chromebook and my Surface. This go around, I want to try something different.
I went to the Microsoft App store. I first came across Writing Master - Blog, Essay or Novel Writer. It is easy to install and has in-app purchases. I also wasn’t to keen on the Ai assistant.
Trust me, the store has a lot of apps. However, as a novelist, what I’m looking for is something with few distractions. Did I happen to mention there are a LOT of apps out there, but never fear, I found one I like and it is working for me.
I found Write Genre. It is basic as hell, which is what I love. It exports, and will only import it’s own software, but you can cut and paste from other applications. Here is a screenshot of the character outlines.
This is what makes me smile. See that MOTIVATION!!! I set my word count at 2500 words a day. Some days I make it, and some days, after midnight, I get in the other 635, but I’m a rock star in my heart. I have highlighted my theme, and set the word into another color so that when it appears in the text, I yell, “Oh, my theme!” It’s silly, but I’m writing and you’re reading this, so there, smarty pa-tarty!
The characters each have a different color for their names or nicknames, so you can physically see, that I didn’t need to say that man’s name six times in that paragraph (steamy scene or not).
It will outline your notes.
I like Write Genre because I could test it out at no cost. However, it only allows X number of characters or titles. I can’t remember which. The full version of the software is only $29, and a one-time price.
Test it out here for free and let me know your thoughts.
