Chapter 1 - Adriel

I stood out on my balcony looking at the sparkling lights from the many buildings and cars that made this city the thriving hub of life that it was. It was beautiful. I couldn't imagine ever wanting to take over the world. I liked it the way it was, even though I knew that I could if I wanted to. There wasn't a human alive who could challenge me and my demons. But I wasn't my brother, Katashniel, I didn't want to rule over all. It was one of the reasons I never challenged any of the other demon kings and queens. I could and rule absolute in both realms. When I was younger, the thought appealed to me, but my mother was human, and had she not taught me what it meant to be human, I might have been like my father and brother.

I survived them both, which meant that I was the strongest.

But I'm also the curious sort. It had been a year since Théoden , a vampire-dragon hybrid had entered my world from a portal to his. Never had such a thing been done, and yet a human had worked such magic. God, Théoden was beautiful! At one point, I wanted to keep him here, but he would have fought me. This wasn't his world. He spoke of how things were where he came from. That vampires, dragons, and werewolves ruled and held dominance over humans. I wanted to see what a world like that looked like. More importantly, I wanted to see a dragon. A real fire-breathing dragon!

It's decided, I must go to this world where Théoden came from. But I wouldn't go alone, no. Even if I wanted to, Vahiel and my other knights would never allow it. Closing my eyes, I called Vahiel to me and within seconds, the gorgeous demon appeared, and bowed.

“My Liege,” Vahiel said and remained bowed on one knee.

“Rise, Vahiel.”

He did and stood quietly, waiting for me to speak.

I looked down at the street below, watching the traffic going in both directions. “Can you open a portal to the world where Théoden came from?”

“My Liege?” he asked.

I turned to face him and there it was, that look of concern. “Can you do it, Vahiel?”

“I—um—yes, my Liege, but why?” he asked with a stammer.

“Because I wish to see this world and its dragons. I want to see what a werewolf is and I want to see Théoden again. Can you bring us back to our world safely?”

“Of course, Your Majesty. My only concern is for your safety. We don't know anything really about his world,” Vahiel said.

“I know, that is why I will not be going alone. You will come, that is a given. But who else should join me?” I asked.

“Your entire army in this city, My Liege,” Vahiel said. “We don't know how hostile they will be or where we'll end up.”

I shook my head. “Bringing that many demons would draw more attention and concern. They might mistake it as an act of war.”

“Actually, Your Majesty, bringing that many demons would be impossible. The portal could never handle all of your army in this city. It's just I would feel safer if we could,” Vahiel said.

“Ahh, I see. Can you send us exactly where Théoden had transported from and to?” I asked.

Vahiel ran his fingers through his thick, black hair and I wanted to smile. Because I knew that my request was stressing him out. He looked at me with those stunning electric blue eyes and nodded. “Yes, My Liege. I have mastered the spell that stupid human used. But only a few will be able to travel through the portal. Any more than five demons and it will become unstable. I will not risk your life.”

I pursed my lips as I pondered his warning. I trusted him completely and if he said no more than five could pass through the portal, I'd have to choose my companions wisely. For he was right... I had no idea how hostile they would be. They'd taken over the entire world, and even with five demons at my side, I would still be seen as a threat. It wasn't like I could call and tell them I was on my way. I nodded and walked past Vahiel and back into my living room, taking a seat in one of the leather recliners. I crossed one leg over the other and tapped my fingers on the armrest.

Vahiel followed me and was still standing, waiting to see if I wanted to proceed.

“Who would you suggest come with us? Only three more.”

He sighed. “Is there any way I can convince you not to go, Your Majesty? We don't know how time will work in his world, and leaving yours unprotected—”

“Why would my kingdom be unprotected? Are you implying the Lords and Knights who remain are incapable?” I asked.

Vahiel bowed his head. “Not at all, my Liege. But they will be without your command.”

I waved my hand. “The Eighth Gate is sealed with Oria in control. There is peace between demons and humans. Other lower demons wouldn't be able to conquer what I control, not even in their dreams. What is your real concern?”

“That we don't know how powerful they are, Your Majesty,” Vahiel confessed. Théoden mentioned that there are vampire and dragon kings and the one who holds power over him is both a dragon and werewolf. I don't even know what kind of creature he looks like.”

I chuckled as I tried to imagine the vision he was conjuring. Probably something with four legs, fur, and scales. “And I aim to find out. Now, answer my question. Who shall come with us?”

This is an exclusive newsletter serial. I will be posting monthly at least, but I will try to post bi-weekly. If you would like to read the first part of this story, “Théoden Meets Adriel” it is a VIP exclusive available for Beta Capo, Consigliere, Alpha, and Royals.
