Are you celebrating the milestones that matter?

Tips to help you gain financial clarity and keep more of what you make

Hi !

This has been one of those weeks where everything happens at once.

Both boys had field day at school. We celebrated Kris' birthday. Daniel's birthday was this week too (and his party is tomorrow, so if you're reading this while I'm blowing up balloons and frosting a cake... that tracks). Next week is the last week of school. It has been a lot.

But in the middle of all of it, there was this moment at field day that kind of stopped me.

I was standing on the sideline watching the kids run around with their friends. Laughing, competing, having the best time. And it hit me how much they've grown this year. Not just physically, but in who they are. They're ready for the next grade. They're ready for the next thing.

A year ago they were different kids. And if I hadn't been paying attention, I might have missed it.

Milestones only count if you notice them

We make a big deal out of milestones for our kids. Birthdays. Moving up a grade. Learning to ride a bike. We take the pictures, we throw the parties, we tell them how proud we are.

But when it comes to our businesses... we don't really do that, do we?

Most business owners are so focused on what's next, or what's not working, that they never stop to look at how far they've come. We skip right past the milestones. We don't even know what they are half the time.

And that's a problem. Because if you don't know what your milestones are, you don't really know if your business is growing... or just getting older.

One milestone worth knowing

There are a lot of numbers in your business, and not all of them deserve a party. But there's one that's worth paying attention to, especially if you've been in business for a few years and you're still not sure where you really stand.

It's your break-even point.

This is the point where your revenue covers all your expenses. Not where you're making a profit yet... just where you stop losing money. Everything after that is yours to keep.

A lot of business owners have never actually calculated this number. They have a general sense of whether things feel okay or feel tight, but they've never pinpointed the exact moment where the business starts working in their favor.

Knowing your break-even point changes the way you think about pricing, spending, and growth. It gives you a line in the sand. And once you cross it, that's worth celebrating.

Business Finance in Plain English

Break-Even Point: Your break-even point is the amount of revenue your business needs to bring in to cover all of its costs... both fixed (like rent, software, salaries) and variable (like materials, shipping, or contractor fees). At break-even, you're not making money, but you're not losing it either.

💡 Why it matters: This number is one of the most important milestones in your business, and most owners don't know theirs. Once you know it, you can answer questions like: How many clients do I actually need? Can I afford to hire? Is this new expense going to push me backward? It turns guessing into clarity. And crossing it? That's the moment your business starts paying you back.

What you can do this week

You don't need a finance degree to figure this out. Start simple:

If the math feels fuzzy, that's okay. The point isn't to get a perfect number on your first try. The point is to start paying attention to the milestone instead of flying right past it.

Until next time

This time of year is busy for all of us. Between the end-of-school chaos, the birthday parties, and everything else on the calendar... it's easy to let the business stuff slide.

But if you can take five minutes this week to look at where your business actually stands, you might realize you've hit a milestone you didn't even know about. And that's worth noticing.

Happy almost-summer,
