Hi !
This past month is one we won't forget for a long time.
My dad was in the ICU. It was touch and go for a bit, and there were moments when we genuinely didn't know which way it was going to go.
I won't get into all the details. But I will tell you this... he made it out. And not only did he make it out, he's better than ever. Watching him bounce back has been one of the most grateful periods of my life.
I'll be honest, when situations like this come up, I’m not thinking much about business. When you're sitting in a hospital waiting room, your spreadsheets feel very, very far away. But once we got home and had a moment to breathe, something stuck with me.
What kept him stable
The thing about the ICU is that nothing happens by accident. Every few hours someone is checking vitals. Heart rate. Blood pressure. Oxygen.
The numbers tell the story before the patient can.
The doctors weren't waiting for something to go wrong before they looked. They were watching constantly. And when something started to shift, they could act early... before it became a crisis.
And then it hit me
A lot of business owners run their finances the exact opposite way.
We don't look until something hurts. We don't check the numbers until payroll is tight, or a tax bill shows up, or a slow month turns into a slow quarter. By the time we notice the warning signs, we are already in trouble.
Your business has vitals too. They are sitting in your books right now, quietly telling you whether things are stable or whether something is starting to shift.
You just have to be willing to look.
Business Finance in Plain English
Days Cash on Hand: Days Cash on Hand is a simple number that tells you how many days your business could keep running on the cash you have right now... if no new money came in tomorrow.
You take the cash sitting in your bank account and divide it by your average daily operating expenses. The number you get is your runway.
💡 Why it matters: This is one of the most honest vital signs in your business. It cuts through the noise of revenue numbers and big sales. It just tells you the truth: if everything stopped tomorrow, how long could you keep the lights on? Most business owners we talk to have never calculated this. And once they do, the conversation about cash flow gets a whole lot more focused
What you can do this week
You don't need a fancy dashboard to start watching your vitals. Pick one or two things to check on a regular schedule and build from there:
- Look at your bank balance every Monday morning. No analysis. Just look. The habit matters more than the math.
- Calculate your Days Cash on Hand once this month. Knowing the number changes the way you make decisions.
- Pull a list of unpaid invoices. Money you've earned but haven't collected is one of the loudest warning signs there is.
That is it. You don't have to overhaul your whole financial system to start paying attention. You just have to start looking.

We recently launched a new offering called Your Monthly Financial Pulse. It's built to give you a clear, honest picture of your business each month... without having to become an accountant to make sense of it.
A few things we built into it:
✅ A monthly dashboard showing your revenue, profit, and cash flow at a glance
✅ A short video walkthrough so you actually understand what you're looking at
✅ A monthly “watch out" flag so you can catch the small shifts before they turn into something bigger
There's more inside, but rather than list it all out here, we'd love to walk you through it.
Book a call with us and we'll talk through what's included and whether it's the right fit for where you are.
