It’s Not Miscommunication. It’s Mismatched Lenses: Synergy Across Generations in the Workplace
“They will never understand me.” I think many of us have felt this before.
At work, we often treat communication as a matter of speaking more clearly, but sometimes, the gap is not in the words. It’s in the experiences behind them.
Last week’s Synergy Across Generations session reminded me how differently each generation was shaped by the environments they grew up in.
Gen Z tends to value speed and directness.
Millennials often look for clarity and alignment.
Gen X leans more towards structure and process.
None of these approaches are wrong. They are simply shaped by different experiences, expectations, and realities.
And perhaps that’s what we forget most often.
WHY Generational Understanding Matters More Than We Think
👓 Because we see others through our own lens. We naturally interpret behaviours based on what feels normal to us. But what feels respectful, efficient, or collaborative to one generation may feel completely different to another.
🧩 Because different experiences shape different expectations. Every generation grew up in a different environment, different technology, leadership styles, communication norms, and social realities. Those experiences quietly shape how people work, respond, and connect today.
💬 Because communication is more than just words. Sometimes, misunderstandings happen not because people are unwilling to communicate, but because they attach different meanings and expectations to the same interaction.
WHAT I’m Beginning to Notice More Clearly
🔍 No generation is “wrong”. What we often label as “difficult,” “too sensitive,” or “too rigid” may simply be someone operating from a different framework of understanding.
⚖️ We often confuse difference with resistance. When people approach work differently, it’s easy to assume they are uncooperative. But often, they are simply prioritising different values like speed, stability, flexibility, clarity, or structure.
🌱 There is strength in generational diversity. A multi-generational workplace can feel challenging, but it also creates opportunities for learning, balance, and growth when different perspectives are valued instead of resisted.
HOW Can We Collaborate Better Across Generations
🧭 Lead with curiosity, not assumption. Instead of asking “Why are they like this?”, try asking “What shaped this perspective?” Understanding begins when judgment pauses.
👂 Listen for the experience behind the behaviour. Sometimes, what people need isn’t agreement. but acknowledgement. When we listen beyond the surface, communication becomes more human and less reactive.
🤝 Leverage strengths instead of resisting differences. Each generation brings something valuable to the table. The goal isn’t to make everyone think the same, but to create environments where different strengths can complement one another.
What stood out most from the session was something simple, yet powerful:
We often judge others through our own lens, while forgetting that our lens was built differently from theirs.
Maybe better collaboration does not begin with trying to “fix” another generation. Maybe it begins with understanding.
Understanding the experiences that shaped them, the environments they grew up in, and the values they carry into the workplace today.
Because in a multi-generational workplace, differences are inevitable. But when we stop resisting those differences and start learning from them, there is far more connection, empathy, and synergy waiting on the other side. 🤝🏻
