Be Comfortable in Uncomfortable Places
Most leaders think their job is to have the answers.
But Dr. Kua Kee Tui, Head of HR at Mizuho Bank Malaysia, offered me a different perspective:
Perhaps leadership is also about being comfortable when we don’t have all the answers.
In a constantly changing environment, certainty can feel safe. But the very things we rely on to feel certain - what worked before, our authority, even our own experience - can sometimes become the things that hold us back.
WHY Do We Need to Be Comfortable With Discomfort
🌏 Because what worked before may not work everywhere. Something that worked well in one culture, team or environment doesn’t automatically work in another. Before assuming we have the answer, we need to understand the landscape we’re stepping into.
🤝 Because leadership means being willing to learn from those who challenge the status quo.
The next generation may question the way things have always been done and that can be uncomfortable. But instead of seeing that discomfort as resistance, leaders can choose to get curious. Their questions may reveal new perspectives, expose assumptions, and show us where the organisation needs to evolve.
