MouseCalls Alert: Android Users Need to Check their Phones Now

Mar 09, 2021 10:46 pm

Over the last 12 hours, MouseCalls has been made aware of a specific hacking attack that has importance to Android users ONLY. Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, and iOS users are not affected. However, if you have an Android or know someone that does, please make note of this.

Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a new remote control virus contained in as many as 9 Android apps distributed via the Google Play Store. From CheckPoint Security: "The attacker obtains access to victims’ accounts, and eventually completely controls their device. Upon taking control of a device, the attacker has the ability to control certain functions, just as if they were holding the device physically, like installing a new application on the device, or even control it with TeamViewer."

Here are the affected apps:

Cake VPN, Pacific VPN, eVPN, BeatPlayer, QR/Barcode Scanner MAX, Music Player, tooltipnatorlibrary, and QRecorder.

If you have any of these apps on your Android device, we advise that you delete them immediately.

MouseCalls routinely gets inquiries from prospects and clients about privacy and "the best VPN to use". As you can see above, there are many reasons we don't recommend subscribing to a random VPN service. MouseCalls installs and distributes Small Office and Home Network Security powered by Minim.
