Scam bulletin - "Covid vaccine registration" bilking people out of money

Jan 20, 2021 8:01 pm

Over the last 48 hours, MouseCalls has had at least two clients report that they were scammed by individuals purporting to "need to register them for their Covid vaccine." One client allowed the scammers to access her computer and suffered financial losses in the hundreds as a result.

While not new, the scammers are now hijacking legitimate websites and pushing through full-size pages that appear to be urgent and legitimate registration forms. Victims are provided a number to call as well as a form to fill out that includes a request for personal information such as their Social Security Number, date of birth, street address, and more.

Quick tips:

  • You cannot pay to have your name put on a list to get the vaccine. That's a scam.

  • You cannot pay to have early access to the vaccine.

  • No legitimate entity will call you unannounced and start asking you personal questions to "ensure your place in line."
